Alyx - One Year Later
âAre you nervous?â Asher asks as we ring the bell.
âA little,â I confess. âDo you think theyâll even remember me?â
Before I can answer, the door is thrown open by none other than Amelia Peterson. Sheâs bigger than she was the last time I saw her, but she still has the same infectious smile.
âAlyx!â she cries, throwing her arms around me.
I will the tears in my eyes not to fall. This is a happy reunion.
Betsy, the kidsâ full-time nanny, stands behind Amelia, holding Thomasâs hand. Heâs grown so much; instead of the baby Iâd cared for, a handsome little boy stands in front of me. If it wasnât for Thomasâs solemn brown eyes, I wouldnât be sure it was the same child.
âPlease, come in,â Betsy said. âAmelia stole the maidâs door-answering job.â
We enter, and the click of my heels on the marble floor sounds strange. I almost never wore hard-soled shoes when Iâd lived here.
Trey Peterson steps out of his study with the same disingenuous smile I had become accustomed to as his employee plastered on his face.
âMr. Schulman!â he says. âAnd Miss Miller. What a surprise! Are you working with Schulman Appraisals now?â
âItâs Mrs. Schulman now, actually,â Asher says, squeezing my hand. âAnd yes, Schulman Appraisals is lucky to have such a talented appraiser working with us. Iâm supervising my wifeâs training. Sheâs an especially astute student.â
âIs she now?â Mr. Peterson says with a smirk.
I can feel Asherâs hand tighten around mine a bit. I squeeze back and catch his eye. Itâs ok. Let it go.
âI can show you where the new paintings are!â Amelia says, breaking the tension. She tugs on my other hand, almost pulling me off balance.
âCalm down!â I tell her with a laugh. âI wonât be a very good appraiser if you make me trip and break a leg!â
She hugs me. âAlyx, youâre good at everything,â she says.
âShe is, isnât she?â Asher says as he places a hand on my back and escorts me towards the portrait room.
It occurs to me that Iâm in the exact house I was in a year ago. This time, though, itâs with my new husband.
I wonder briefly if fate is responsible for bringing the two of us together. Whether it was fate or just mere coincidence, I send up a silent thanks for whatever it is that put Asher in my path.
