Alyx - One Year Later

“Are you nervous?” Asher asks as we ring the bell.

“A little,” I confess. “Do you think they’ll even remember me?”

Before I can answer, the door is thrown open by none other than Amelia Peterson. She’s bigger than she was the last time I saw her, but she still has the same infectious smile.

“Alyx!” she cries, throwing her arms around me.

I will the tears in my eyes not to fall. This is a happy reunion.

Betsy, the kids’ full-time nanny, stands behind Amelia, holding Thomas’s hand. He’s grown so much; instead of the baby I’d cared for, a handsome little boy stands in front of me. If it wasn’t for Thomas’s solemn brown eyes, I wouldn’t be sure it was the same child.

“Please, come in,” Betsy said. “Amelia stole the maid’s door-answering job.”

We enter, and the click of my heels on the marble floor sounds strange. I almost never wore hard-soled shoes when I’d lived here.

Trey Peterson steps out of his study with the same disingenuous smile I had become accustomed to as his employee plastered on his face.

“Mr. Schulman!” he says. “And Miss Miller. What a surprise! Are you working with Schulman Appraisals now?”

“It’s Mrs. Schulman now, actually,” Asher says, squeezing my hand. “And yes, Schulman Appraisals is lucky to have such a talented appraiser working with us. I’m supervising my wife’s training. She’s an especially astute student.”

“Is she now?” Mr. Peterson says with a smirk.

I can feel Asher’s hand tighten around mine a bit. I squeeze back and catch his eye. It’s ok. Let it go.

“I can show you where the new paintings are!” Amelia says, breaking the tension. She tugs on my other hand, almost pulling me off balance.

“Calm down!” I tell her with a laugh. “I won’t be a very good appraiser if you make me trip and break a leg!”

She hugs me. “Alyx, you’re good at everything,” she says.

“She is, isn’t she?” Asher says as he places a hand on my back and escorts me towards the portrait room.

It occurs to me that I’m in the exact house I was in a year ago. This time, though, it’s with my new husband.

I wonder briefly if fate is responsible for bringing the two of us together. Whether it was fate or just mere coincidence, I send up a silent thanks for whatever it is that put Asher in my path.
