Chapter 17
WHEN Jaxom awoke to find his cheek resting on silky brown waves, his first instinct was to move away before Dorian woke up, but in the next moment he remembered the previous night and relaxed again. As ever, Dorian had been full of surprises, going from shy to demanding, from the logical medycus to the complete wanton.
Part of Jaxom still couldn’t believe he’d allowed his passion to overtake him, but hearing Dorian compare himself—even remotely—to a greedy slave who’d had little to recommend him except his beauty had been more than he could stand. It had been a foolhardy thing to do, but Jaxom could hardly think of it as a mistake. If anything, it was an argument against maintaining the tight control he’d always prided himself on.
Dorian sighed and shifted in his sleep but didn’t awaken, obviously quite comfortable where he was. Jaxom felt a smile tugging at his lips, and even though no one was there to see, he forced himself to stifle it. This was not the time to become lax, no matter how tantalizing it was to succumb to the multitude of emotions Dorian inspired in him.
If he wasn’t in the midst of a mission, he would have had the option of leaving the military behind to explore possibilities with Dorian, but he couldn’t think about such things now. He was in the midst of a mission, and he had a duty—not only to his country, but to Dorian. Dorian had placed his life in Jaxom’s hands more than once, following Jaxom’s orders even when his heart had told him differently, even when he had been proven right. He’d saved Jaxom’s life and had been willing to give up his most prized possession to do so. The least Jaxom owed him was to see to it he completed the mission whole and happy and safe.
The archer who had shot at them could have merely been a native who hadn’t liked the looks of two outlanders, but it could also have been an assassin—someone who knew about the Treasure and wanted it for themselves. Someone who had learned Dorian was Connmeeran and wanted him for themselves. For all they knew it could be someone from Wuldham coming to retrieve their savior.
No, tempting though it was, he had to maintain a soldier’s mindset. He had to remember why they were here, and it wasn’t for either of them to find happiness.
Dorian moved again, stretching slightly as he began to wake.
Perhaps if he maintained some decorum and distance during the day, Jaxom thought as he felt Dorian’s smooth skin slide against his, it wouldn’t do any harm to give in to his desires at night.
Maintaining that distance and decorum was making for the longest day Jaxom had endured since arriving in Jarvoct. From the moment Dorian opened his eyes and gave Jaxom a shy smile when realization sank into his waking mind until their midday meal and even now, all Jaxom could think about was getting his hands
