Chapter 43

Leigh looked like she had swallowed a gallon of gas when I passed her. “What’s up with her?” I said to Ashley.

“Randy. She’s worried he’s turning into a TV preacher.”

“He doesn’t have the right hair for that job.”

Ashley smiled, but I could tell it had been a tough conversation.

“This should cheer you up. I talked with the guy inside and showed him the painting.”

“He recognize it?”

“No, but he let me put a flyer up, and he said there’s a local paper that lists garage sales, estate sales, and stuff like that. They’re open on Saturdays. Just up the road that way.”

“Perfect!”

Leigh came back, and we piled into the car. I told her which direction to go, but she turned around.

“No, the newspaper place is the other—”

“I’m done. We’re going home.”

“What?” I said.

Ashley looked at Leigh like she wanted us to drink gasoline.

Leigh stopped and yelled, “I’m going home. I’m tired of chasing something we’ll never find. We should keep the money and split it up instead of trying to be do-gooders.”

Ashley reached for the door handle. “Let me out.”

“Fine,” Leigh said. She turned to me. “You want to stay too?”

“I-I . . .” It was hard to process what was happening. “Ash, get back in the car. We can call.”

But Ashley had already jumped out and closed the door.

“Make up your mind, Sherlock,” Leigh said.

I got out, closed the door, and watched Leigh speed away.
