Chapter Ten

Tex woke up first the next morning and offered to run out and pick up something for breakfast. She jumped in the shower after not being able to convince Kayce to join her. Kayce wanted to, but she was exhausted from the night before. Just a few more minutes of sleep was all she asked for. There would be plenty of time for more sex later.

A gentle kiss on her lips woke her up.

“Shower is all yours. Do you want me to go out and get breakfast, or is there something here you prefer I make?” Tex asked.

Kayce sat at the edge of the bed and stretched her arms above her head. “I have eggs, bacon, bagels, bread, cereal. It doesn’t matter to me, but you don’t have to cook breakfast for me.”

“Don’t be silly. I want to.”

“Or you could wait for me to shower, and then we could go out somewhere for breakfast.”

“Tell you what. You think about it while you’re in the shower. Do you need any help? I volunteer to wash your back for you.”

Kayce laughed and took her clothes to the bathroom. “No I’m sure I can manage. Go relax.”

“Okay, but let me know if you change your mind.” Tex snuck in a brief kiss before Kayce shut the door.

After her long shower, she found Tex sitting on the bed with a worried look on her face.

“Is something wrong?” she asked.

“I was on my way out to my truck to get my camera and laptop to work on pictures while you were in the shower and….”

“And what? What is it?”

Tex stood up and took her hand. “Come with me, I’ll show you.”

Tex led her down the hall. She gasped when she saw the roses sitting on the dining room table.

“Those are the flowers from the office, from the creep. Where did you find them?”

“They were on the porch by the front door. I opened it and there they were. Are you sure they’re the same ones?”

Kayce moved closer to inspect them. “The rose in the middle. See how it’s color is faded, almost bleached, on the outer petals?”

Tex leaned in and nodded.

“They’re the same ones I received at the office, but I told Lisa to throw them out. Was there anything else besides the flowers?”

“I don’t think so. I opened the door and brought them inside. I didn’t take a good look around other than looking for anyone who could’ve put them there, but I didn’t see anyone.”

Kayce opened the front door and stepped out onto the porch. There was nothing there. She checked the steps too, but didn’t find anything. Nothing spray painted on the garage. She walked over to the window where Brant was watching last night and didn’t see anything. On her way back inside, she saw a note taped to the house beside the front door. It wasn’t nice to throw the roses away.

She ripped the note off the wall and looked back over her shoulder hoping whoever left it stuck around to watch her reaction.
