Since Keith refused to speak to his mother, Maymay felt she had no choice but to confront her about the allegations. It took days before she worked up the nerve to speak with her. She knew if Mrs. Shirley denied what Devell had told them it would only cause more problems, but it was something that had to be done. When she got all her thoughts together, she went to her mother in law’s house to talk about what Devell had told them. Every time she mentioned Devell’s name, Mrs. Shirley changed the subject. At one point Maymay yelled, are Devell and Keith brothers? Mrs. Shirley stared at her in disbelief; Maymay could see she was lost for words. For a minute, she thought Mrs. Shirley was going to say yes, but instead of answering the question she asked her what has wrong with Keith. Not wanting to change the subject, she repeated the question, are Devell and Keith brothers? Mrs. Shirley stared at her without blinking an eye and was obviously feeling a little uncomfortable. Mrs. Shirley told her that she should be more concerned about why her husband refused to work. She stared into Mrs. Shirley’s eyes to see if there was any inkling that she was trying to hide something. There was no sign of malice, but there were many signs of deception. When Maymay tried to explain what she thought was going on, his mother closed down. She realized she wouldn’t get an answer, so she stopped trying. Her hope to save her reputation and get the truth from his mother was nonexistent. As she turned to leave, his mother asked her the question again. What’s wrong with Keith, why isn’t he working? Maymay responded,

Well, I was hoping I would be able to get some answers from you. Keith seems to be troubled by something. Something so deep it’s out of my reach. I’ve tried to talk to him with no success. To me it seems like his troubles are deeper than us. In the last few years, I’ve watched my loving husband become a bitter man, and the explanations he gives have no merit. He’s not using logic with his thought process. No matter what I’ve said to him, I can’t reach him. It’s like he’s driving himself insane. He doesn’t want to work, help around the house, or spend time with his son. I’ve tried to help him, but nothing works. I feel if something doesn’t change I’m going to lose him, and I don’t want that to happen. So please tell me is there something that happened to him as a child that could be responsible for his strange behavior?
