Ellie wanted to question Leah’s husband herself, but if Leah was killed because of something she knew, she might have kept records.

She studied the scene. Leah was still dressed in sweats. No immediate signs of a sexual assault. No stab wounds or other visible injuries although if she’d fought her attacker, she might have bruises on her body beneath her clothing.

And evidence.

She turned in a wide arc and surveyed the room, looking for signs of an altercation, for something out of place, but nothing struck her as off. There was a chair in the corner, bedroom shoes by the closet door, no overturned lamps or blood anywhere. And the front door had not been locked.

ERT would be here soon. But she wanted to look around first.

She checked the nightstand beside the bed. Inside she found a mystery novel, along with a book of prayerful meditations, chap stick, and a comb.

Her foot hit something on the floor beside the bed, and she noticed indentations where the legs of the nightstand had been moved. Dropping to her knees, she pulled it away slightly and found a small opening cut into the wall.

Her pulse raced as she slid her fingers into the hole, removing a box. Lifting the lid, she saw there were numerous articles, a journal of notes and photographs inside.

On the outside of the small black notebook, Leah had written the words Hawk House.
