Isaac knows he’s got his head in the sand. What he’d said to Ethan, about it being open season on him, that’s not a lie. That’s always been true. It’s the cost of doing business for a young black man. He’s been around long enough to know that once the press starts knocking, they don’t just go away.

Part of him wants to say to hell with it all and throw open the doors.

The problem, though, is that he’s not sure what doors he’d be throwing open. Coming out and saying “I’m a gay black man” or even “I’m a bisexual black man” (which was probably more accurate), would be one thing, but coming out and saying, “I’m straight and I’m fucking a white boy anyway”? A disaster.

And right now he doesn’t know what else he’d say. He doesn’t feel any different than he did before that night at the Hard Rock. Wouldn’t he feel different if he’d changed? Wouldn’t he know?

Something’s changed, though. He knows what he almost said before he hung up the phone. And he knows that something squeezed tight in his chest when he heard, I’m yours, Isaac.

But until he can put a neat label on it, going public would be a disaster. The last thing he needs is a disaster in the middle of his career. Being a critical darling hasn’t done such a great job of paying the bills, not compared to playing Ike. Playing Ike has meant he’s working his way through the stack on his desk, buying an actual new car, paying back his folks for all the times they supported him starting out. This job means everything. He can’t afford to wreck this, not now.

His phone buzzes, and he checks it, assuming it’s Ethan. It’s Sam instead. I’m around the corner, can I come up?

Why not, maybe the rumors will change directions if he starts letting his other co-star come visit this late. If you can fight your way through the press, sure. He climbs out of bed and dresses after washing himself off, pulling on a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt.

She’s there a few minutes later, suggesting that ‘around the corner’ actually meant ‘downstairs’.

Sam looks like hell, or as close to hell as a starlet with a stylist and a mountain of expensive makeup at home can look. “Isaac, I am so sorry,” she says as soon as he opens the door. “I saw the video from last night.”

He swings the door open to let her in. “They give you any trouble downstairs?”

“Nah. There was a fight in one of the clubs downtown, I think most of them went to cover that.” She kisses him on the cheek. “I hope this doesn’t cause any trouble for you.”

“You’re not worried about it causing trouble for Ethan?” Isaac asks. “He’s probably got more at risk right now than I do, playing Eric-the-flaming-gay-neighbor.”

Sam flops onto one of the barstools in his kitchen. “He’s always had rumors going on around him like that though. You know, cause he’s pretty.
