CHAPTER 14
âLucky for you we came back in time,â said my grandfather for the tenth time as he reached over the kitchen counter and grabbed a bottle of his homemade Gordonâs Broomshine. On any other day I would have told him enough already, but seeing as he just saved me, I let him vent.
He poured himself another heathy portion of gin. The bottle shook in his hands as he tipped some more into Charlotteâs glass. Surprisingly, she was able to keep it down. She drank that stuff like a fish. The two of them were perfect for each other.
âThe wards will keep them out from now on.â He twisted the bottle cap. âIâd like to see these bastards try and break through my wards. Theyâll cook like charred meat.â
After the Dark witch attack, my grandfather had immediately gone to work. With chalk and markers in hand, he chanted dark spells, hexes, and curses to mark our doors, windows, and walls with warding barriers to keep the Dark witches from walking into or teleporting into our home again. Every wall and window had a ward marked on it. With Charlotteâs and my help, weâd finished the wards in about two hours.
Now my home pulsed with magical energy, like the beating of a heart, as though this brownstone was a living stone beast ready to devour any intruders. And I was finally able to relax a little, or at least let out some of that pent-up tension.
I didnât want to burst my grandfatherâs bubble, but these witches were powerful, and a small part of me feared that even these wards wouldnât hold them back. Who were these Dark witches?
My eyes went past the kitchen to the couch in the living room where between the three of us, we managed to carry an unconscious Faris down two floors. He weighed a lot more than he looked. But he hadnât woken up yet, and that worried me. It didnât help that his face was terribly pale. His hair fell into his eyes. Heâd hate that.
What was that magical stone sheâd used on Faris? Iâd never seen anything like it before. Iâd never seen a witch or anyone spell a mid-demon into a coma like that. He went down in a mere second. It was horrifying, and it scared the crap out of me. Later, Iâd looked for the stone. But all I found was an empty black robe. No witch. No stone.
The only good part of this royal screwup was that Iâd managed to keep the black orb, the virus sample and my crystals. Iâd also stashed the three black robes in a black garbage bag to take with me to the Dark Witch Court. Iâd seen the witches go down. But theyâd pulled another Houdini on us. All I had were their robes.
âHeâll be fine,â said Charlotte. I turned my gaze to see her smile filled with compassion. âThereâs no fever. If there was a fever, Iâd be worried. And his pulse is strong, which is a very good sign.
