The following morning, Amy sat in the passenger seat of Danielle's jeep, waiting for the taller woman to return from her assignment at the bakery, rubbing her hands together with glee. It had been at least twenty minutes since Danielle walked into Minnie's. The older woman must be giving her a tough time.

“Let’s go!”

Amy jumped in her seat as a grinning Danielle flung the car door open.

“Ugh! Don’t ever do that again.” She rubbed her chest, feeling her heart beating erratically against her ribcage and fighting to regulate it.

She drew in slow, deep breaths before turning to focus on Danielle. When she did, she was surprised to find the I.T. manager staring at her sheepishly.

“Sorry. I got too excited.”

“What happened?”

Danielle’s eyes brightened. “They agreed to the deal. We can have a cake tasting now.”

Amy squinted. “You’re lying.”

“Nope. They agreed to give it to me for $100.”

Huffing, she hurried out of the jeep, walked right up to Danielle, and poked her in the shoulder. "What exactly did you say to get Minnie to give you such a ridiculous price for a three-layer cake?"

Danielle opened her mouth and then shut it. She folded her arms, taking a step forward. “What do you mean by ridiculous price?”

Amy pursed her lips. “An intricate, three-tier fondant cake from Minnie is worth at least two hundred dollars. One fifty if I negotiate. I don’t understand how you got her to go so low.”

Danielle leaned forward, bringing her eyes level with Amy’s. “So you let me go in there and pressure a young girl to give me a cake for half price as a prank? That was low, Amy. Apologize.”

Genuine anger swam behind Danielle’s eyes, but Amy barely registered it. She was too busy drinking in all the little details of the beautiful face before her, focusing on things she had started to appreciate without realizing how much. Like the delicate scar at the left side of Danielle’s nose that made her a little more human and less angelic. Or the way their breaths intermingled as they stared at each other. It must have led to each of them drawing in less oxygen than was healthy, because Amy’s eyes dropped to Danielle’s full lips. Amy leaned forward slightly and parted her own lips.

Danielle stood still, and all Amy could think about was the fact that if she leaned forward a couple of inches, she could finally have what her heart had wanted for so long. For years, she’d had at least a dozen dreams about kissing Danielle.

She peered up to find Danielle’s eyes locked on her lips too. Gone was the anger that had tightened the taller woman’s face. Instead, a mild curiosity settled over her features.

Here’s my chance. I could finally find out how her lips would feel against mine. But Carissa would never forgive me.

Before Amy could make a decision, Danielle straightened and huffed. "That was mean."

Amy shook her head, trying to understand what had just happened. “What was mean?”

"You sent me into the store with a ridiculous price.
