Chapter Thirty-one

Cat woke to a bright pain in her head and the sound of a loud argument in German, muffled by a ringing in her left ear. She was in a hospital in a room with three other patients. One of which was arguing with a stout gray-haired nurse for more pain medication.

The walls were a soothing cream color, and out the window a forest of thick green maples swayed in the breeze. This can't be Kabul, Cat thought.

She fumbled for the controls on the side of the hospital bed and managed to raise it to a sitting position. The sound of the bed moving startled the nurse and other patient into silence.

Everyone in the room stared at her. Cat looked around for Vince. They'd given him the Narcan. The EMT said he'd be all right. He should be here with her. She had vague memories of seeing Tag, like a nightmare filled with motion and noise. They must have moved her. But where was Vince? She couldn't see him. She touched the bandage on her face and frowned.

"Good morning, Mrs. Schafer," the nurse said in German.

"Where is my husband?" Cat asked, switching to German automatically while her mind fumbled with the new name. Mrs. Schafer, a German name. Tag must have transported them to Landstuhl.

"I have not seen any family here for you," the nurse said. "Perhaps your husband is still in Afghanistan. I'm told the US military flew you to Landstuhl, their hospital near Kaiserslautern, then sent you here because you are a German citizen. Afghanistan is not a safe place for tourists."

"I was helping to rebuild the country." Cat's head hurt. She'd have to be the one arguing for pain medication next. "Did the Americans bother to send my passport along with me?"

"Oh yes." The nurse opened a drawer in a stand by the bed, pulled out Cat's papers, and handed them to her. "Your laptop is here as well as some extra clothes and toiletries. We do have internet available, if you're willing to pay the extra. Our records show you have private insurance, is that right?"

Cat rubbed her bandaged head to ease the relentless ringing in her ear. "Yes. My family has plenty of money. I'll take care of the bill myself." Any claim with the German national health care system might start questions about her identity. "Bring me the papers and I'll give you a credit card number you can bill it to."

"Very well." The nurse headed for the door.

"And some pain medication," Cat called after her, "for both of us." She smiled at the woman in the next bed.

"It won't do any good. That nurse is as stingy as my dead uncle," the woman said.

Cat laughed. Under the covers, she wiggled her toes, then her feet and legs. Everything seemed to work except her right hand felt prickly and numb as well as her tongue.

After deciding she was all right, she climbed from the bed. Her vision swam, and she had to sit back down for a few moments.
