Shotgun Hero. Saturday, December 17th 2159hrs

Skidding to a stop just beyond the back door, I turned to see who had closed it. Either side of the rear exit were two Howlers, making four to our rear and there were another four standing to our front. It made eight in total. With the back door closed, our only way out was through the four to our front. We were in a car park behind the businesses; the exit from it some fifty yards away to our left where it met the road.

All eight men were wearing dark sunglasses and bandanas which covered the lower half of their mouths. To my immediate front, the man’s jacket had the word ‘President’ on a machine-stitched badge high on his left breast. With only some minor wardrobe changes, they could be the Whitstable Riders instead.

‘Is this going to be a straight fight? Or did you chaps bring weapons?’ I enquired through gritted teeth. I was angry at letting myself walk into an ambush; it was an obvious place to stage one. The Howlers might have been just arriving, or in the car park to do a deal. Or maybe they were just outside having a smoke. Whatever the case, the man inside warned his pals, then led me outside like the sucker I am.

Even the man I followed from inside the bar had them, the transformation swifter than I expected.

To Big Ben, Frank, and my dad, I whispered. ‘Watch out for the claws; they are wicked sharp.’

‘Use the Pentagrams!’ hissed Frank insistently, producing his own and holding it aloft.

It created a brief pause as the Howlers all stared at it.

Just to my right, dad gasped. ‘I can’t believe that thing is working.’ Then he started trying to hook his out from inside his top.

‘What is that?’ asked the Howlers’ president.

My father’s fingers paused from scrambling to locate the chain as Frank thrust the silver pendant at the president’s face. ‘It’s a pentagram, beast. Back away and cower in fear!’

Frank got a curious look for a split second, then the Howler swiped the silver necklace with his right paw, sending it flying across the carpark where it hit another werewolf in the face and fell to the ground.

Frank darted back to stand close to Big Ben. ‘Maybe the wolfsbane was picked under a gibbous moon. Its effects can be erratic at that time of the month.’

‘What’s this all about?’ I demanded. We were about to fight, that much was obvious, but maybe they would answer some questions first. ‘Why are you targeting
