2 & 3 My father and mother at about the time of their marriage in 1906 He was born in Lancashire, the eldest son of a printer s proof-​reader and a mill girl He left school at the age of twelve to earn his living and so was mainly self-​educated, though a friendly choir master fostered his considerable musical talent and made him a proficient organist who could expect fees for playing My mother he met when his family moved to London Her father was a master cabinet-​maker and her mother a lawyer s daughter She was better educated than my father though I don t think that either of them ever became aware of the fact Their great bonds were music and the making of laughter They were both stage struck.
