Chapter Nine
Cade looked up as Jude made an impatient noise, but Jude’s attention was focused on his computer. While Cade had initially been banished from Jude’s work office, he’d eventually been allowed inside as Jude became more comfortable with him. That had started about the time they’d begun “dating”, although Cade wasn’t certain if the switch was due to Jude accepting his presence or because Simpson’s creepy behavior was making Jude more nervous than he cared to admit.
Whatever the reason, Cade’s usual place during the workday now was in a chair against one wall of Jude’s office. There was a small table next to him where he could lay out his tablet and get some work done, since being inside Morgan-Wright meant he didn’t have to be on alert every moment. He still scanned Jude’s office every morning, but company security took its job seriously, so once they were inside for the day, there wasn’t much for Cade to do other than be ready for the unthinkable.
His seat also gave him direct line-of-sight to Jude, and if he spent far too much time looking at the man he was protecting, well, there was no one around to notice or care.
Which didn’t mean Cade himself was unaware that what had occurred between him and Jude on Friday had crossed a line; he just didn’t know what to do about it. He knew his attraction to Jude was unprofessional, but he wouldn’t be the first bodyguard to develop feelings for his charge, and it didn’t have to be a problem. And it hadn’t been, until Jude had suddenly grabbed him and kissed him.
Cade had been shocked to find Jude in his arms, and there had been a split second when he’d nearly pushed Jude away. He couldn’t even recall everything that had run through his mind, except for a fleeting moment of exultation when he’d wondered if it was Jude’s unexpected way of declaring his interest in Cade. Reality had set in almost at once, of course, and Cade tried to tell himself that his actions in taking charge of the kiss and making sure Jude was kissed as thoroughly as possible was due to the need to convince Simpson, if he happened to be watching. But he wasn’t even fooling himself. He’d kissed Jude because he’d desperately wanted to, and once he’d kissed Jude, all he’d been able to think about was doing it again.
All of which meant Cade was stuck in a professional and personal quandary. By rights he should be replaced with someone else who wasn’t emotionally involved. But that meant he’d have to tell Jude why, because he’d promised never to lie to Jude. Even though he was sure Jude wasn’t immune to him, there was a wide gulf between Jude realizing he’d enjoyed kissing Cade and Jude wanting to have a relationship with him.
Besides which, Cade didn’t want anyone else guarding Jude. No one, not even Red, was as good at the job as Cade was. There
