CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

PENNY

Two days later, Penny was nervously pacing up and down the street in front of Mrs. MacDonald’s house. She stopped and stood there, tapping her foot, when she saw Andie rounding the corner.

The corp creadha poppet was at Mrs. MacDonald’s home. Even though all the coven members had enjoyed the rush of magical power, dancing and chanting around the fire in Penny’s garden while Ashiq Masih’s image in clay rested on the altar between candles, crystals, and plants, nobody had wanted to be reminded of it the next day.

It was like the morning after a night of drunken fun, Penny guessed. The witches had let go of their usual restraints, not worrying about any rules. But they clearly felt guilty and ashamed afterward.

Penny would have gladly kept the poppet, but Faye’s reaction to it had been worrying. She had turned deathly pale when she had seen the clay figure resembling Ashiq with its needles stuck in the middle. The young princess had gone to her room and had barely left it since.

For Faye’s sake, Penny had agreed to hand over the corp creadha to the coven leader for safekeeping.

To Penny’s tremendous relief, the ritual had been a success. According to Chris, Ashiq had been admitted to the hospital the day after the ritual.

Penny was working on the next step of her plan, which was getting Faye to see a doctor. The young woman was terrified of getting an ultrasound—it was like she imagined seeing horns, hooves, and a tail. But Penny had faith that it would show nothing but a normal baby, and she hoped it would stop Faye from taking the prophecy so seriously.

Even if the examination revealed some “abnormalities,” it would be even more vital to know as soon as possible.

Penny hadn’t quite succeeded in convincing Faye to make an appointment when the next bad news came. Andie had called to report a problem. They would have to take the needles out of the corp creadha.

Andie had been reluctant to reveal the reason over the phone and had asked her to meet at Mrs. MacDonald’s house instead, so they could discuss it with the coven leader.

Now Penny glared at Andie as the brunette witch came closer. She didn’t like that the younger woman was making decisions regarding a matter that was so close to Penny’s heart. Penny was grateful to everyone who had helped, but Andie seemed to relish a little too much the fact that she was now the mediator between Chris and the coven.

Penny was upset with Chris and definitely didn’t want to talk to him. Still, she felt a little possessive, even though she knew it was childish. If anyone had to interact with him regarding this matter, it should be her.

After all, Mrs. MacDonald had insinuated that there was a connection between them. Even though Chris had completely ruined any chance of that ever deepening, Penny was not happy with Andie taking her place.

“Are you going to tell me what happened now?” Penny called as soon as Andie was close enough to hear.
