Hannah

I can’t manage to get Noah back to sleep. He just keeps crying and crying. My panic rises with his volume. Wade used to get so angry when Noah cried.

After almost an hour, Beau knocks on my bedroom door. He’s still shirtless and his hair is mussed from where I was running my fingers through it earlier.

He takes one look at my tear-streaked face and holds out his arms. “You’re exhausted. Let me try calming him.”

I don’t hesitate and immediately hand him over. Beau would protect Noah with his life. I never have to fear that he’ll put my son in harm’s way.

He takes him back to the recliner. He sings softly to Noah when they’re settled, his voice a quiet rumble. Just like that, my son is sleeping peacefully within minutes.

I sigh, the tension leaving my shoulders now that he’s soothed. “I sang to him.”

Beau chuckles. “My wife had the same problem with our girls. Your voice isn’t deep enough. He likes the low sound. Probably reminds him of being safe inside your stomach.”

“Thank you,” I whisper. I’m thanking him for so many things besides just comforting my son. I’m thanking him for being a decent guy. For taking care of both of us. For being someone I can trust.

The look on Beau’s face makes me think that he understands my thanks goes deeper than just this moment. “Go to sleep, Mama. I’ll watch him tonight.”

The next morning, I wake and I’m more rested than I have been in months with achingly full breasts.

I hurry to the living room to check on my boys and find them asleep in his recliner. Noah is on Beau’s chest, a big hand covering his tiny body. My heart swells at the two of them together.

Family. I have a family again. Warmth spreads through me at the realization.

Beau opens his eyes as if he senses my presence. “Did you sleep good?” He asks when I’ve gathered Noah into my arms.

Seeing how gentle he is with my son eases the last bit of fear that’s been holding me back from him. I want to know Beau in every way, want to feel his skin against mine. But I’m too nervous to tell him all of this.

Instead, I nod that I slept well before I disappear to my bedroom to feed Noah. Once he’s done, I start my usual morning chores. Beau tells me daily that I don’t have to do anything around here. But I like helping out. I figure it’s the least I can do since he provides for our every need.

I carry Noah’s car seat into Beau’s bathroom and set it on the white tile. I’m just here to gather the dirty clothes and towels.

As I’m reaching for his hamper, I realize I’m not alone. Beau is in his shower. The glass door is clear, leaving the man of my fantasies completely bared to my view.

I make a squeak of surprise that alerts him to my presence.

He pushes his soapy, wet hair from his forehead and opens the shower door, sending a cloud of humid air toward me.
