My jaw clenched as I stared at the wreck of her car.

Fuck, man.

Any other road. Any other time of night to go driving. Hell, if I’d stopped by Ryker’s place for that beer he’d offered instead of going out at all.

Any other scenario, and I wouldn’t have found her. Hell, she was fading out when I did, and if she had, there was no telling if she’d have gotten back up. Or how long she’d have been here.

Or hell, if who she was running from got to her first.

We hadn’t quite gotten to that - the “who” in this scenario. But I knew she’d tell me when she was ready. Just like I’d tell her about my scars when I was. And I was almost there.

Almost.

But “almost” was a hell of a lot more than anything I’d ever felt before. Because fuck, was I into this girl. Hard. I was flat out falling for her, and that freaked me out a little. It was that in so short amount of time, Jackie had come out of nowhere and just slid under my skin like no other woman ever had.

Shit, I wasn’t really sure how to process that. Yeah, there’d been women in my past, but nothing had ever stuck. Back then, in what I called the first version of my life, before the bullets tore through me, I’d been another me altogether. I’d been sure I’d be dead at any given moment back then, and the women who’d dared to come near me were passing at best.

But since that night where I’d just about stepped into the light, I’d been different, and I knew it. Since then? Shit, there hadn’t even been another woman. Years. It’d been years since I’d done what I’d done last night with her, and that alone was enough to send my head reeling.

But I did know one thing: I was never letting her go. And whoever was after her? I didn’t care who the hell it was. The boogeyman, the head of the FBI, the President - hell, the devil himself.

Whoever it was? Well, he’d have to go through me first, and that shit was not going to happen.

Most of Jackie’s stuff was still in her trunk, which I was able to pry open even as dented up as it was. Later, I’d get Axe or Ryker to tow the wreck out of here and see if it was salvageable. But for now, we were just there for her stuff. I had everything from the trunk packed away, when I turned to see Jackie frowning quietly.

“What is it?”

“I’m missing…” She sighed, shaking her head. “Forget it, it’s fine. There’s no way we’re finding it.”

“What are you missing, baby girl?”

Jackie’s lip twisted in her teeth. “It’s just this little black velvet bag. I had it in the side pocket of this bag-” she hefted one of her duffel bags. “But it must have knocked out in the crash.”

“What was in it?”

“This necklace my grams gave to me the night before Brooke was born.
