I could hear Amelia talking on the phone in the car in muffled whispers. From the tone of her voice, I could tell something exciting was happening. I stood outside in the dark, still warm from the sex. I was bathed in moonlight, surrounded by the trees and the silence and I wished I could share this moment with her every night.

Being with her was amazing. It was extraordinary and like nothing I’d experienced before. I wasn’t just imagining it. She was something else but I wasn’t right for her.

I heard the car door creaking open and saw she was beginning to dress herself.

“Gotta go?” I asked, walking over so I could reach inside for the clothes.

I watched her as she slipped her blouse on and scooped her hair out.

“Yeah, sorry, I have to go home,” she said.

“You don’t have to be sorry about it,” I told her as I got into my jeans.

“Right, I forgot, this is an ideal situation for you. You don’t have to try and make a smooth exit without wounding my feelings.”

There was some coldness in her voice I wasn’t expecting to hear. I looked up at her and she was avoiding my eyes.

“I thought we talked about this already,” I said and she was tying up her sandals.

“Yeah, I know, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to snap.”

I’d put on my shirt too and now I was fully clothed. Amelia stood up and stepped out of the car, taking in a deep breath.

“My sister’s landed up in town out of the blue, along with her kids,” she continued.

I tucked my hands into the pockets of my jeans.

“Something tells me she will not be a fan of us associating,” I said and Amelia looked away, shaking her head.

“No, she will not be.”

“Did she have anything significant to say about me when you asked her about my past?” I asked and Amelia shrugged.

“Nothing really. She didn’t know you personally, so I guess she just knows what the public perception of you in town is.”

I took a step towards her and she looked up at me with a frown.

“There are still a lot of people here who are waiting for you to fail. Who don’t think you can make this work with Piper.”

I wanted to catch her chin, pull her to me and kiss her lips, but that would just have complicated things even more.

“And maybe they’re right.”

“No they’re not!” she snapped and I smiled.

“You have no reason to believe in me, Amelia.”

She licked her lips and nodded.

“You’re right, I don’t know you.”

“You don’t.”

She took a step away, then pulled the front door of her car open.

“Get in, I’ll drive you back to your car in the carpark,” she said.

I didn’t move.

“You should be on your way home. I’ll be fine from here. I can walk. It’s not far.”

At first it seemed like she was going to say something but then she changed her mind and got in the car.

“Goodnight, Cole,” she said without looking at me.

I knew I’d upset her, but it was for the best.
