Thirty-Five

‘This is a terrible idea,’ Connor said to Cillian. ‘A fucking terrible idea.’ The brothers were sitting together in the cab of the truck and moving back down Dennett Road towards the weed house.

They’d quickly driven both vehicles out whilst the officers had been busy taping up the back of the house and had hidden the car a few roads away. They’d then raced to the fancy dress emporium on the high street and the charity shop next to it and had done all they could to change the way they looked without appearing completely suspicious.

They both still wore their plain black outfits, but Cillian now wore a cap and a fake moustache, and Connor had added a bobble hat to hide most of the blond wig he wore underneath it. He made sure to keep some tufts showing at the front and sides, and his eyes looked strangely bright with the blue contacts he’d inserted. To top the look off, they each wore a pair of white gloves, originally part of a magician’s outfit but which looked close enough to evidence-handling gloves to get by. They weren’t the best disguises in the world, but they looked different enough that the officers shouldn’t remember them as twins.

‘It’s not a terrible idea,’ Cillian argued. ‘It’s a ballsy idea, but that’s exactly the reason why we’re going to pull this off.’

‘Yeah?’ Connor turned to look at him. ‘And what if they come round the back of the truck as we’re loading and find the full-grown man tied up there?’

‘I told you, we’ll bring the trees down first and hide him behind that. And I’m pretty sure your threat was enough to keep him quiet.’

Connor had jumped in the back and explained briefly that they were going to pick up some product before he was able to drop the driver back to safety. He’d added a few lies into the mix, telling the frightened man that they were in enemy territory and if he drew attention to them at all, a man called Carlo would not only murder them all but he’d do it slowly and whilst taking great pleasure in their pain. The driver had almost cried and had quickly agreed to stay silent with a nod. He wasn’t the fighting-back sort; he just wanted to get dropped off in one piece. The brothers had been in the business long enough to recognise that.

They pulled up on the side of the road and Connor felt his heart drop. Something was bound to go wrong. This was the most stupid thing they’d ever done. But at the same time, he couldn’t help but admire Cillian’s plan. If they pulled it off, they would make so much money it was unreal. He took a swift deep breath in and opened the door.

‘Right. Here goes nothing.’

Stepping out onto the pavement, he swallowed and hoped that the sound of his racing heart wasn’t as loud to everyone else as it was in his own ears. Cillian joined him, stepping forward towards the officer standing at the front door.
