CHAPTER SIXTEEN
It was just after dawn when they left the office and headed for the Eastman home. It was on the exact opposite side of town, but Rachel figured they were getting out just early enough to avoid the often harsh morning traffic. Rachel knew she should feel tired, but the excitement and mysteriousness of the case had her on edge. Sheâd have to sleep soon; she knew this, not wanting to push the limits of her body while she was currently doing so well in terms of responding to the treatment and, overall, feeling better than she had in almost a year.
As Jack made his way across the still-quiet city, the number of vehicles on the roads increasing by the minute, his cellphone rang. It was sitting in the center console, and Rachel looked over to it just as he did. The caller display read: ANDERSON.
âI guess heâs back in town and wanting updates,â Rachel said.
âYeah. Iâm sort of glad we got out of the office before he showed up.â Jack thumbed the Accept button, and the car's Bluetooth did the rest.
âHello, sir,â Jack said.
âGood morning, Rivers. Iâm catching up on the active cases I had going on when I left town and wanted to touch base with you and Gift first. Howâs the hospice care case going?â
âItâs sort of blown up a bit, sir. Agent Gift and I are currently on the way to speak with a potential suspect right now, actually.â
âWhat are the details?â
Together, they went over the finer details of the case. It took about two minutes, ending with Rachelâs discovery of Timothy Eastmanâs criminal record.
âIâve got this email about possible police and bureau protections for the other patients on the list for the research center,â Director Anderson said. âWhat became of that?â
âNot much,â Jack said. âNo one with the PD would commit to sending patrols. The best weâve gotten so far were a few drive-by checks. From what we can gather, the check-in at the Moyer house was about half an hour before the killer broke in and killed Brittany Moyer.â
âIâll make some calls and light some fires under asses about that, then,â Anderson said. âFor now, Iâve got about a hundred other things to catch up on. But keep me posted on this. And Agent Giftâ¦how are things?â
âGoing great,â she said. âMaybe better than theyâve been in about a year or so.â
âThatâs good to hear. You two take care.â
He ended the call, and Rachel found herself reminded of the care Anderson had always shown toward her condition. He'd always been respectful and kind about her cancer and how it had affected her work, but it was nice to hear the continued concern. It was a reminder that behind the boss, there was also a friend she could count on.
It was 7:20 when Jack parked in front of the Eastman home. It was in a nicer part of town, in a neighborhood with homes that Rachel assumed landed somewhere in the high six-figures. Light shone
