TWENTY-FOUR

1975: GILLY’S STORY

Gilly was burning with resentment, but with nobody to talk to or confide in, she saw that she had nowhere to turn. She’d never felt so alone or defenceless. So she resolved to get one up on Sister Brennan.

Mandy had been with them for a couple of days, and they had gelled well as a group. If it wasn’t for the sense that their babies might arrive at any moment, the home would have felt to Gilly like a boarding school, or what she imagined it would be like at university. If they could only get rid of Sister Brennan, things might not be so bad. She couldn’t figure out why the nun would be so hateful; she must have had some seriously bad stuff going on in her life.

Being a Saturday morning, things were more relaxed. The girls got to lie in a little longer, and breakfast would be served until nine o’clock. Gilly woke first and couldn’t wait for Theresa and Mandy to join her. She’d been saving a surprise.

Mandy woke first, then Theresa.

‘I’ve got something to show you,’ Gilly erupted with enthusiasm. ‘I’ve been saving it for a special occasion.’

‘What’s the occasion?’ Mandy asked, confused.

‘It’s Saturday!’ Gilly smiled. ‘You know when I was locked in the cupboard the other day?’

Gilly wanted to cry again when she thought about it, but she was determined to press on with this.

The girls nodded. Mandy had already been brought up to speed in great detail. She’d also been warned about Sister Brennan and how to steer clear of her.

‘I smuggled some books out. Not just those Mills and Boon stories. I put one behind the plant pot in the hall. I’m going to bring it up after breakfast. You’re going to love it!’

For the past two days, Gilly had been secretly transporting Mills and Boon books that she’d removed from the throw-outs box and had carefully hidden them under piles of baby clothes, where they wouldn’t be detected. She’d also found a gold nugget in there which she knew they’d have some fun with.

As the girls headed down the hallway, they were aware of something going on just outside the front door. Gilly went to investigate, still in her nightie and dressing gown.

‘What was it?’ Theresa asked as she rejoined her friends in the small dining room.

‘Just a guy painting over some vandalism on the signage outside. It looks like we had some unwanted visitors last night.’

‘What did it say?’ Mandy asked.

‘You’re sure you want to know?’

It had shaken Gilly. It felt like they were hidden away in the home, but this message suggested some people were bothered by their presence. Is this what people thought of her?

‘Of course.’

‘Home For Whores. It’s being painted over, so it’ll be gone soon.’

They finished their breakfast then Gilly called in her fellow conspirators for a briefing.

‘Mandy, you watch this end of the hall. You take the far end, Theresa. Let me know when it’s all-clear and I’ll grab the book. You’re going to love it.
