Chapter Twenty-Four

Zander looked in his rearview mirror, keeping an eye on the cop car outside Sunset Terrace Condominiums. He’d followed Riley and Frankie Dawson back to the big building, surprised to see that the WBPD had set up surveillance on the prosecutor. Someone in the department must not be as dumb as he thought.

The cops hanging around will make it harder to get to her, but not impossible. Besides, that means Riley must be scared, so my plan is working.

It wasn’t enough just to take Riley’s sister and her life. He needed to ensure maximum suffering along the way. He wanted to enjoy knowing he’d inflicted as much pain as he’d had to endure.

Starting the car, Zander pulled away from the curb and nosed the vehicle into traffic. It wasn’t time for Riley Odell to die. Not yet.

Besides, he had to get back in time for his next meeting to avoid uncomfortable questions. He had to play it cool and act normal, even as he moved forward with the next phase of his plan. It wasn’t a good time to attract attention or arouse suspicions.

Driving down Bay Street toward downtown Willow Bay, Zander slowed as he passed the modest Barker and Dawson Investigations office. He didn’t like how the skinny PI had stopped to talk to the cop on the way out of Riley’s building. He was getting too close for comfort.

Frankie Dawson might end up being a problem, especially if he kept hanging around Riley Odell like a love-struck teenager. Zander wondered if it was time to put an end to the PI and his meddling.

It would give me great pleasure to end the pathetic bastard’s life.

Continuing up the street, Zander reminded himself that Frankie was only a few years older than Xavier would be now if he’d been allowed to live. It didn’t seem fair.

Why should that idiot get to walk around when Xavier is six feet under?

Xavier was the only person Zander had ever sacrificed for, and the only blood relative he’d ever known. He’d given up his greatest pleasure to protect Xavier, and it had all ended up being for nothing.

Parking his car in the lot near City Hall, Zander thought back to the glory days in DC. The days before he’d gone into hiding. He’d had the city living in the grip of fear, and it had gone to his head.

The heady pleasure of wielding power and inflicting pain had caused him to take one too many chances and to make one too many mistakes. His hands gripped the expensive leather steering wheel as he recalled the long-ago night he’d almost gone too far.
