She came gradually back to consciousness, drifting in and out of sleep, called back reluctantly by the street noises far below: a blend of faraway auto horns broken only by an occasional siren’s wail. Victoria shifted her position and her hand touched smooth flesh. She was jolted instantly awake. Barry Lytle, his naked back to her, lay quietly sleeping. His breathing was easy and even.

She looked about her. They were in a luxurious hotel room. Sunlight streamed in through the partially closed drapes. Their clothes lay scattered around the room. She tried to get up, but head pain and dizziness forced her to lay back for a moment. She closed her eyes and tried to remember what had happened.

After the St. Regis, she foggily recalled a number of places. Barry seemed to know just where to find the best music, usually in exotic and sometimes squalid surroundings. She seemed to recall telling him of her business problems, and his soothing reassurances. Everything after that was a jumble of fragments. They had been at a private party somewhere in the Village. She recalled the collection of very strange people. And there had been cocaine, she remembered that. She had a hazy image of being urged to participate. She had a fear of drugs, but she wondered if she had.

Surprisingly, she had complete recall of their lovemaking. Barn’ had become more attractive to her as the evening progressed. His eyes, his voice, his touch, everything seemed to call out to her. She had gone to him without hesitation. Everything he did caused exquisite pleasure. He was strong, yet gentle. He seemed almost like a mystical figure.

She felt she had at last found someone whom she could rely upon, a strong man who offered love and support. She moved closer to him, feeling the reassuring warmth of his body. She was about to drift back into sleep when she remembered her breakfast appointment with Joyce Spitz.
