Chapter 13

“They’re all out, okay?” Parker looks exhausted when he stands up from peeking under my bed. “I promise you, Kiera, we got them all.”

I nod at him, but I want him to look back under there. I need to know for sure if he really got them out or if there’s one that’s still hiding and waiting for an opportunity to come out and crawl on me. The thought gives me chills and I shiver.

“Any idea who did it?” Asher’s eyes are dark as he looks around my room. I shake my head when he glances at me, but I have the distinct feeling that his question is more for the other devils than me.

“Barry? Does he have the balls to do something like this?” Caspian is sitting on the edge of the bed holding my hand. He somehow found a medical kit and took care of my wounds, talking me through what he was doing while I hissed in pain.

Asher shakes his head. “He’d probably love to do something like this, but he’s not smart enough. He’s the kind of guy to pull the shit he already has. I don’t know who would be able to come up with the idea of the rats.”

“It’s pretty fucked-up,” Parker adds. He’s been pacing around my room ever since we got the rats out. I’m sure that Meyer’s Grove isn’t going to be thrilled with feral rats running around the dorm, but the devils didn’t care about that. They just wanted to get them out of my room so that I could sleep without them crawling on me.

“What about Lila and Clementine?” Caspian’s voice is quiet, but we all immediately turn to look at him. “I don’t know where they would get the rats, but we all know that they want to keep their spots at the school. There’s two of them, so it’s a bigger risk if another family wants to try to buy someone out.”

“They wouldn’t.” I shake my head firmly, fully believing what I’m saying. “Sure, they’ve been a little cold recently, but there’s no way that they would do something like this. It’s beyond mean, and they’re not like that.”

“Are you sure?” Asher crosses the room to my bed in three large steps and sits down on the other side of me, taking my free hand and giving it a squeeze. “Are you absolutely sure that they wouldn’t do this?”

“It has to be someone else,” I tell him. “They’re my friends, even if we’re not really close right now.”

Right? There’s no way that my old friends would do this to me, no matter how scared they were. It’s just inconceivable to me to think that someone who once cared about me could fill my room with rats and then sit back and wait for me to get hurt.

“Maybe you’re right, darling” Luca adds from the corner of the room. “It may have been someone else, and we’ll figure out who it is, okay?”

I have the distinct feeling that he’s placating me, but I just nod at him.
