THIRTY

Sally drove through the prison’s vast parking lot toward the exit. She was on the phone with Detective Clarke.

“I popped into Matt’s house last night,” Sally said. “I see you’ve cleared out most of his pantry. Is this about the oleander?”

“That’s not something I’m prepared to discuss,” Clarke said.

“I thought you might like to ask Matt where the tea and white wine went.”

“I’m guessing you know who took it?”

Sally was silent. Nicole had come to her for help. If she told him that Nicole had taken the white wine and tea from the Tates’ house, Clarke would naturally question Nicole. Sally reminded herself that Nicole and Lauren’s visit could be a way of deflecting Sally away from the real killer. If Nicole was involved in Carolyn’s death, telling Sally that Daisy did it was a great way to keep Sally, and the police, looking in the wrong place.

Clarke sighed. “If you know anything that could help us nail the killer, you have to tell me.”

“Okay. Nicole took the white wine and the teas from the house the day after Carolyn died. Carolyn was the only one who drank Chardonnay, and she also had a thing about rooibos tea. Loose-leaf tea especially. Again, from what I can make out, only Carolyn drank it.”

“You think the oleander was in the Chardonnay or the rooibos tea?”

“It makes sense, if Carolyn’s the only person who drinks both.”

“I’ll look into it.” He paused. “Anything else you want to tell me?”

“In Lauren Duthie’s parking garage there are six boxes of Carolyn’s belongings. You might want to look through them.”

Sally had reached the boom gate at the exit. She waited for the guard to open it.

“I won’t even ask how you know this.”

She heard his chuckle. She was relieved that he wasn’t angry.

“And I think one box is missing. Matt said that Nicole took some of the white wine and tea for herself. What if she removed evidence to protect herself or the killer?”

“Do you have any other reason to suspect Nicole?”

“I guess not.”

“Seen anything more of the stalker?” Clarke asked.

“I think I know who he is. He was a cop when I was a rookie. I knew I’d seen his face before.”

The lie was too easy.

“Does he have a name?” Clarke asked.

“Chester Lee,” Sally said.

A moment’s silence, then Clarke spoke. “He’s a nasty piece of work. I’ve wanted to get him back behind bars since he was last released. Thanks for the tip and avoid going places where he can approach you alone.”

“Will do, and thanks for looking into this.”

After the call, there was a fluttering in her chest—she loathed lying and the thought that she was in cahoots with Foster, by lying to Clarke, had her breaking out in goose bumps. Her mom would describe what she had just done as the slippery slope to oblivion. She’d have to make sure that wasn’t the case.

“I won’t see Foster again,” she told herself, as she drove home.

She regretted telling him what she knew about the Carolyn Tate murder.
