Chapter Twenty-four

“How’s Katy?”

“Much better,” came Asha’s voice down the line.

Tanya leaned against the kitchen counter and sighed in relief.

“They flushed the toxicity out of her system and are monitoring her for adverse reactions,” said Asha. “She’s awake and talking, but weak.”

“What’s their diagnosis?”

“She was poisoned for sure. The doctor said it’s a good thing she only took a few bites and threw up soon after. If she had eaten a whole muffin and let it digest, she’d probably be in awful shape.”

“She’s going to be okay, right?”

“She needs to rest. She’s only allowed black tea and crackers for the next couple of days. She’s already complaining about missing her morning caramel lattes and cake treats. That’s going to be tough on her.”

“If that’s all she’s griping about, she’ll be fine,” said Tanya, relief flooding through her. “Do they know what made her sick?”

“They think it’s brodifacoum.”

“Rat poison?”

“They’re testing the muffins, but there’s a backlog. Lab results won’t be out for another forty-eight hours. That’s if we’re lucky.”

“Do they know two more homes had these cakes left on their doorsteps?”

“A deputy from the sheriff’s office came to take a statement about an hour ago,” said Asha. “He didn’t seem overly interested but said they’ll check on it.”

“Did you share the wrapper with the note?”

“I handed it to him, but I got the impression he would have taken things more seriously if Katy had died.”

Tanya winced.

“He looked like a rookie to me. Didn’t even bother to bag the wrapper. I think you should take over this team. Teach them some basic skills.”

Asha paused.

“I called Cora and thanked her for the muffins. She seemed genuinely confused. I don’t think it was her. Someone was trying to frame her.”

“We don’t want to jump to conclusions,” said Tanya. “How long are they going to keep Katy in the hospital?”

“They will discharge her this afternoon. The paperwork might take a while. Can you pick us up in a couple of hours?”

Tanya lifted her head and peeked into the living room.

Noel was on the couch next to Max, huddled under a blanket. With Tanya’s help, she had showered and changed into a clean pair of shorts and T-shirt Tanya had dug out of the basement closet.

She now held a grilled cheese sandwich in one hand and was clutching onto Max’s collar with the other, like she was scared he’d leave her.

Tanya had picked out a can of vegetable broth from the pantry which would have been much more kind to Noel’s malnourished body, but she had chosen the sandwich instead. She hoped she wouldn’t get sick.

Tanya had locked all the doors and windows, and drawn all the curtains in the house. She had turned on the TV to a cartoon channel and handed the girl the remote, but she hadn’t touched it and had been staring blankly at the screen. Her eyes didn’t waver during commercials and she didn’t laugh at the jokes.

Tanya wondered what was going through her head.

She turned back to her phone. “Some pretty crazy stuff have been happening here.
