Chapter 7
This was not how Bunny thought sheâd be spending the evening.
She stood next to a dairy cow, inspecting the beastâs fourth stomach. The organ had suffered torsion and despite Bunny and Haileeâs best efforts, they couldnât alleviate the problem without surgery.
Sheâd been at the Prairie Land Dairy Farm since three in the afternoon and it had been six when sheâd opened the cow up. It was probably close to seven now. Sheâd barely had time to shoot Ethan a text. Abomasal volvulus on a dairy farm. Rain check?
âLooks good,â she said to Hailee. âWe can secure the abomasum to the body wall and close her up.â She settled the organ in place and finished the procedure.
Between her, Hailee, and the dairy farmer, whoâd stayed to get anything that wasnât within armâs reachâwhich was rare, Hailee was meticulousâthe surgery had been clean and free of complications. Hopefully, the recovery would be as well.
She rattled off instructions to Hammond, the farmâs owner. Heâd taken over for his parents and was all of twenty-five. In her experience with Prairie Land, the cow wouldâve died if Hammond hadnât been in charge. His father had almost never called her until his cows were at deathâs door.
âThanks for getting her help early,â she said.
Hammond ducked his head, the flash of pride at her maternal compliment making her feel all of her thirty-eight years.
The dairy farm was so far out of town she was always surprised it was considered part of Moore.
âI trust whatever you have to say, Doc.â
The impending decision loomed. Their clients trusted her and if she made the decision to sell, then theyâd think sheâd done it because it was the best option for all of them.
Once her gear was packed, she slid into the passenger seat. Hailee drove them to town, so finally, she could check her phone.
Iâm heading to Cincinnati tomorrow and I have the kids this weekend. But I donât go to bed early. Just saying.
She grinned.
Hailee glanced over, then dropped her gaze to the phone. A dark brow lifted. âYouâre happy?â
âI am.â
Hailee pressed her lips together like she was suppressing a smile.
âYou want to ask who.â She had worked with her tech too long.
âYouâll tell me when you want to.â
She wanted to so badly. She and Hailee had more than a work relationship, and traveling all over the county had provided a copious amount of time for personal conversation.
How could she come out and say I might get to sleep with Ethan Blake tonight?
âBut I think I know who,â Hailee said in a singsong voice, shooting a wicked smile Bunnyâs way. âThe signs were obvious. Oddly placed hostility, the refusal to meet with him, the way you flushed when he caught you at Cashâs. Ethan Blake got to you at some point, but today youâre all sunshine and secret grins.â
âItâs not like itâs long-term.â She scowled out the window. âHeâs going to be my boss or push me out of business.â
âThen why start something at all?â
Good question. What was
