Chapter Seven

Riley

I don’t know what Nick will think of me if I tell him the truth about my baby’s conception. “I don’t normally do the sort of thing that gets you pregnant.”

He frowns. “You mean, have sex?”

I flinch at the phrase. He probably thinks I’m a moron. “It was my first time and I felt so alone the night of Gilbert’s funeral. I guess God thought I should be punished for that.”

He studies me for a long moment. He’s so close I can see the flecks of gray in his blue gaze. “That’s one way to look at it. Another way would be that God didn’t want you to be alone in the world anymore.”

I run a hand along my stomach, absorbing his words. “I kind of like that idea.”

“So, it was a one-night stand with a stranger you didn’t know?” Nick clarifies softly. I’m not sure what he’s getting at or why he should care.

“I knew Ben from around town. He was the mayor’s son, and he was always flirtin’ with me. I thought that maybe he might care about me.” I can’t believe I was so stupid. “I came back after I knew and tried to tell him. I figured it’s his baby too. He has a right to know he has a kid.”

“And what happened?” Nick prompts after several minutes of silence.

A flush heats my cheeks. “Ben thought I was a liar and a slut. That I was only saying that stuff because of who his father was. Accused me of wanting his family’s money.”

Nick stiffens and anger flickers across his face. “He said all of that to you?”

“Even if I had the money to get a fancy lawyer and prove it’s his baby, I don’t want a man in her life that’s not going to love my daughter just as much as me. She deserves the very best.” I’m going to make sure she gets it too. I don’t know how yet but I’ll take care of my girl.

Something in Nick’s eyes soften. “A daughter, huh?”

I shrug. “Well, I haven’t been to the doctor for any of this yet, so I don’t know for sure. But I’d like a little girl to shower with love.”

He puts his hand over mine, the one that’s still on my stomach. “You’re going to be a real good mama.”

For a split second, I wish it were Nick’s child. He’s exactly the kind of father I want to give to my daughter. The type that’s strong and true and kind and brave.

“He didn’t even kiss me.” I don’t know why I admit the words to Nick. I shouldn’t be upset about it all this time later. But Ben wouldn’t kiss me or hold my hand. He just shoved me down in the forest floor and stuck his dick in me. When I got dressed later, I felt even lonelier than I had before.

Nick cups my cheek and he’s staring at me so intently it feels like I’m naked in front of him, like he can see everything I’ve ever longed for.
