Chapter 12

My one consolation for being on the same team as Hilary was that at least I wasn’t alone. On our way to the gym, Ally came up behind Lauren and I, looking more than a little disturbed by what we had just witnessed.

“I’d seen the pictures on the daily bulletins but they’d made it seem sort of glamorous. This…this was different. It made it so much more real. This honestly sounds like it’s going to be a lot more dangerous than I could’ve ever imagined,” said Ally. “Those are trained Elites, and yet those vamps were tearing them apart. Did you see that one who literally ripped that guy’s head clean from his neck?” she added, shuddering.

“I can’t imagine ever confronting one of those things in person,” said Lauren, wincing.

“Like, I wish they had shown us that video before we got inducted into the Academy.” Ally’s face was hard and fearful. “I bet enrollment would’ve dropped by half.”

“Can you refuse an invitation, though?” I asked. No one had ever tried, so no one knew. “Anyway, maybe it won’t seem so scary once we’ve completed our training. At least now it makes sense why they’re putting us through all these grueling trials. If we can’t make it here, we sure as hell won’t make it out there.”

I wished I had felt as confident as I seemed. Privately, I was also nervous about the prospect of facing the vamps in person, though for entirely different reasons. The thought of killing another creature—even a nasty, dangerous creature like the ones shown in the video was crushing. I hadn’t even been able to stomach eating meat since my brush with the boar and wondered if I’d have had the heart to kill even if I could’ve. How much harder would it be to kill a humanoid creature, like myself in every way but for her need for blood?

We entered a second gym—this one laid out like a basketball court with wooden bleachers on either side—where Mona stood waiting in the doorway of a back office. “Listen up,” said Benjoram, rubbing his wrists together, “today I’m going to be testing your physical fitness and stamina—two things that every Elite needs, regardless of your other, innate powers. The goal here is that when we’re done, you’ll all be formidable killing machines, skilled with weapons, in addition to having a unique specialty. Ideally, there won’t be a single weak link. While I’m doing that, Mona will be taking you aside individually to help you figure out what that power is if you don’t already know. Mona, who do you want first?”

Taking a sip of coffee and consulting her clipboard, Mona said, “Lucas Dane?”

Lucas stepped up and Mona led him the length of the gym to the very back, where there was what looked like a long conveyor belt; the rest of us were craning our necks in curiosity when Professor Ben called us back to attention.

“To continue with what I was saying: you’re going to need to be in peak physical form if you hope to survive an encounter with one of these creatures.
