Chapter 7
The next day was rough on Justice. In the morning he had several tests before the hospital would discharge him. After what seemed like an eternity of instructions and forms to fill out, my friends helped me load him into one of our SUVs and we were on our way home.
Shadow and Why were very nervous, twitching and fidgeting most of the ride. And Horse wouldn’t even meet my gaze. I would let it go until we got Justice settled in bed, and if they hadn’t spilled by then, I was going to force it out of them.
“Your room,” he gasped after we’d gotten home and helped him up the stairs into my bedroom. I was just as shocked as he was but smiled widely.
“Welcome home, mate to our brother,” Shadow said with a nod of respect. “We are glad Cave has found the other half of himself and wanted to welcome you accordingly.”
“No one’s ever given me flowers before,” Justice whispered in awe as we got him into bed and propped him up with some pillows. It wasn’t just flowers my overzealous friends got. It was like a friggin flower-gift shop exploded in my room. There were dozens upon dozens of arrangements, stuffed animals, get-well balloons, and the whole nine yards. “This is amazing.”
“Glad you like it,” Horse said with a smile and then darted his gaze when I looked at him.
“Alright, enough of this shit,” I growled, causing Justice to jump. “Sorry, honey, but my friends are acting all weird, and I want to know what’s going on. I didn’t mean to pee all over your homecoming celebration.”
“No, it’s fine.” He chuckled and patted my arm. “I was just lost in my own head having a little-girl moment where I wanted to giggle and say ‘preeetty.’”
“You go right ahead,” Why said with a big smile. “I’m a big fan of all things pretty.”
“Okay, no changing the topic and trying to make me go all gooey because my mate is adorable.” I stared daggers at each of them, almost smiling at the way they squirmed. “Start talking.”
“We will tell you, I promise,” Horse said and held up his hand to stop me. “But we’ve got a bigger priority right now.” He pointed to where my mate’s knees were covered with a blanket. “We all talked this morning and everyone wants to help. I split us up into three shifts to do a little healing over the course of the day. This isn’t as dire as a brain bleed, so we can take our time and do it right. Plus if we do it too fast, it could make things worse.”
“You guys can really heal me?” Justice’s face lit up like the Fourth of July.
“We’re going to try,” Horse answered gently. “It’s a new power of mine, and I’ve not had reason to try it out often. I really just want to give your body little jump starts to help the healing process.”
“Let’s do this then.” Button chuckled from the doorway.
