Chapter Fifteen

As the red vehicle approached the stranded carriage and officers in black uniforms piled out, Griff snarled through the phone he clenched between his jaws to run.

He didn’t need to tell me twice.

The moment the enforcers, or whoever those people were, pulled the crowd of irate customers off of the porter, they would notice that the occupants of two of the cabins were missing. I turned around and bolted down the winding path.

Leaves and low branches tangled in my fur as I passed, but the minor irritation was nothing compared to what would happen if we were caught. Griff followed a few paces behind me, either slowing because of the mobile phone he had to carry or out of a sense of protecting his mate. It was hard to tell which side of his soul was in charge, but I didn’t dwell on it too long.

Our claws scraped across stony ground, and a cool breeze meandered through the trees and low shrubs. We continued down a winding slope leading to a fast-running stream that looked narrow enough to cross in one leap.

Gunshots rang through the air. That’s how it sounded through these extra-sensitive wolf ears. Birds burst from the trees, filling the sky with clouds of black. My throat dried. I hoped nobody was shooting at us.

I wasn’t sure how long we ran, but each time Griff barked at us to stop, I shook my head and continued. He had no idea how bad things could get if we fell into the clutches of Hades. My memories of demon torture were fresh enough to keep me going until sunset.

Eventually, we ran out of cover and reached the edge of a tiny village. I flopped down behind a blueberry bush and panted.

“Cathwulf?” Griff placed a hand on my flank, making me flinch.

I shifted back and shuddered at the sudden cold. “Sorry for making you run so much. I didn’t want to end up with those bastards.”

“You’re shaking,” he said, his brow furrowing.

“Anyone even remotely connected to Hades gives me the shivers.”

Griff closed the distance between us and placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. “Then I’m glad we continued for so long.”

I gave him a pained smile.

He glanced over his shoulder into the forest’s depths and frowned. “I doubt that they’ll find us here.”

“Even so, let’s call for an Überwald.”

“I’ll see if Fenrir has a better solution.” He stared down at his phone with a tight frown.

Shifting back, I peered around the back of the bush into the row of cottages. They were spaced at about thirty-foot intervals and looked like something out of a human fairy tale with their timber frames and thatched roofs.

Griff spoke to Fenrir in a low voice, telling him that we’d made contact with Coral and would need to hire a magical cartographer. I clenched my jaws and bit back a snarl. Griff was so respectful of Fenrir and so eager to please him that he didn’t lead with a demand for help. Didn’t he understand that enemies might be close by?

I barked at him to get to the point.
