Steve got out of the car and stretched.

She was in the office at reception, getting a room for the night.

He was tired, though he hated to admit it. She had insisted they stop, and now it was close to ten, and God alone knew how far away the next town was.

The motel was a bit of a dump, and he’d made sure to park the car further away so it couldn’t be seen from the office. Not that there was any sign of life. It looked like they were the only guests.

They devoured the chicken and chips, and fell into bed and slept.

He was awake at six, the screaming of the birds outside rousing him. After showering he gently woke her.

‘C’mon. Wakey, wakey.’

Through sleep-ridden eyes she put her arms around his neck, breathing in the soapy smell of him, her lips rubbing against the stubble on his face.

‘Enough of that now, or we’ll end up screwing, and we’ve got to get moving.’

Steve put a coffee in her hand.

‘There’s cornflakes here,’ and a bowl was put beside her. ‘Eat your breakfast.’

He sat on the side of the bed and ate his.

‘Why the mad rush?’ she asked, rubbing the sleep from her eyes.

‘Trust me. We have to get going.’

She looked hard at him, and he knew she was longing to ask more questions, but instead wisely sipped her coffee and began eating from the bowl.

‘I’ll go and shower.’

Steve watched as she slid out of bed and went into the bathroom.

She really was something.

Most women would have questioned him and pestered him for answers, but she accepted everything so calmly and trustingly that it blew him away.

If only he could protect her from what was bound to happen.

And for a moment, he hated himself.

By seven-ten, they were on their way.
