I sleep horribly. I fight it off as long as I can, but the adrenaline and sex high have worn off and my body is suffering for it. I cling to Sable for comfort as nightmares decay my sleep.

I wake often before drifting off again only to be pulled back out. I clench my jaw, holding in the screams I need to release. After the last bout with the visions, I can barely make out the glimpse of orange light on the horizon through a window. The storm’s passed and a new dawn is beginning. I want the moment to fill me with hope, with a shining and positive disposition like I’ve never felt.

How can it not?

Especially with this wild and bright beauty beside me.

I brush my hand across her cheek, sighing and wanting to stay put. My fingers trail over the mountain range her side profile offers, peaks and valleys to rival those of the Rocky Mountains. I could wind myself along these roads forever.

My eyes shut tight, my chest tightening...recalling my dreams. No, my nightmares.

I dreamed of that fateful day often, the day I quit being a ranger.

My partner and I were on a search and rescue of missing hikers when a path gave way. Franklin, my partner, stumbled, grabbing onto roots, and crying out. I grabbed for him, trying as hard as I could to get to him. I can feel the ache in my hips where rocks dug in as I did everything I could to keep myself safe and pull him up. I wish I woke before I watched him fall. But I only wake after I watch him crumble at the bottom of the grove, his body in wrong angles and I would never be right ever again.

He had a wife and kid. He didn’t deserve the pain and end. I did. It should’ve been me. I was the loner, the one with nothing going for him. But no, nature had taken Franklin. And when I close my eyes, I can’t wake up from the moment.

Shaking my head, I carefully pull myself from the bed, not to disturbed Sable.

Hard and yes soft, Sable.

She could start avalanches, tearing down mountains, with one look and I am almost certain she has.

But those same eyes softened to me, poured into me like a fountain of youth. A knot forms in my chest as I pull my clothes out of the dryer, dressing quickly, and my thoughts racing.

I can run away, like I always do. Retreat to my hellscape on a hillside to rot in solitude. But even the idea feels like a betrayal to Sable, to what she gave me last night. I’ll have to wait and see how she is today before I can find my hideaway.

Plus, there’s the hedgehog.

Sables finds me standing over my small woodland friend. The little gal already looks better, her quiet snores rhythmic and not painful as they'd been before. Her arms loop around my waist and I relax, her touch undoing all my tension from my poor sleep.
