“You’re sure this is necessary?” Though she couldn’t see a thing with the blindfold Evan had insisted on, she enjoyed the mystery. The only thing she knew for sure was that he’d driven her in circles for what felt like half an hour to confuse her.

“It’s all part of the fun. It wouldn’t be much of a surprise otherwise.” He sounded like a schoolboy who’d just got a new puppy. “Wait right here and I’ll open the door for you. No peaking, either.”

A thrill ran through her that he would put so much energy into this, whatever it was. That he wanted to surprise her. When she’d asked him what prompted the special occasion, he simply replied he wanted to take her on a real date, especially now that they were officially dating. She pressed him further, considering this was above and beyond what couples did on dates.

He’d replied that she was special enough and they didn’t need a special occasion. But she suspected he was attempting to get her mind off the break-in.

His plan was working.

The Tahoe’s door opened, pulling out of the firm grasp she’d kept on the handgrip, and Evan assisted her out. She heard the door shut then he slipped his arm around her waist, holding her close as he led her across a hard surface. A prop plane powered up somewhere nearby. The airport?

“I can’t stand it anymore. Where are you taking me?”

He chuckled. Sela loved his laugh and the resulting happiness that it sparked inside.

“I’m learning that you’re not a very patient woman, Sela.” He whispered in her ear. “Just a few more steps and then. . .”

Evan lifted her into his arms. Sela yelped then giggled, enjoying it all too much. For a few seconds, he held her close. Cradling her gently, his breath was soft and warm against her face. Finally he relinquished her to a seat in another vehicle.

“No peaking.” Evan kissed her cheek. “It’s almost over.”

Pressing her hand against her cheek where his lips had been, Sela smiled. From the other side, Evan slipped into a seat next to her. Doors closed around her.

“You ready?” a man’s voice spoke from the front of whatever they were sitting in.

“Yes,” Evan said.

“Can I take this off now?” Despite her initial excitement, impatience gnawed inside.

A whirring resonated, accompanied by a small vibration—a helicopter? A few moments later, her stomached flipped inside, leaving no doubt they had lifted off.

Evan slipped his hands around her head. Thank goodness.

When he removed the blindfold, he brandished a big, sheepish grin. Sela glanced at her surroundings and gasped.

“I would have kept you guessing until we arrived at our destination, but I could see your patience was wearing thin.” He grabbed her hand and brought it to his lips, pressing a gentle kiss there. Then he continued to hold her hand as the helicopter transported them to their destination, still unknown to Sela.

Drawing assurance from his grip, she held tight. “I. . .where are we going?”

“Let’s enjoy the view for now.
