Garret and Ritcherd both shot to their feet when Kyrah entered the dining room late—and alone.

“Where is she?” Garret demanded.

“She’s a little under the weather,” Kyrah said as Ritcherd helped her with her chair. “But she’ll be fine.”

“I take it you’ve been talking,” Ritcherd said as the men took their chairs again.

“We have,” Kyrah said. “And first of all, I think the biggest problem is . . . of a feminine nature. She’s not feeling so well physically this evening, but emotionally she’s doing very much better.” She smiled toward Garret and added, “Am I embarrassing you, Garret? Or are you completely in the dark here?”

“Neither,” he said firmly. “I just spent the last several months on a ship with the woman. You think I didn’t notice her cycles of not feeling well, which followed closely behind every man on board steering clear of her?”

Ritcherd laughed and Kyrah threw her napkin at him, although she couldn’t help laughing herself.

“Well, that certainly helps put things into perspective,” Ritcherd said.

“Yes, I suppose it does,” Garret said, “but is she . . .”

“She was very honest with me, Garret. Her feelings are much as you described, but her heart’s in the right place, in spite of some level of confusion. It’s too bad she can’t see this Andrew again.”

“Whatever for?” Garret asked, appalled. That was the last thing they needed.

“I wonder if her seeing him so little, and not having seen him at all since she’s met you, has made it impossible for her to make an accurate comparison. If he’s as despicable as you say, she would surely be able to see the difference. When I was with Peter Westman, and he was doing his best to be charming and sweet, it was extremely confusing. But eventually his real self came through, and when I was with Ritcherd again, the contrast was startling.”

“It’s a good point,” Garret said, “but it’s not possible. If this was simply a romantic involvement, it might be different. But having her anywhere near him is just too risky . . . as if anyone even knew where he is.”

“Well, perhaps one day . . . when the time is right, she will find the opportunity for comparison under the right circumstances.”

“Perhaps,” Garret said, deeply hoping for any other option to put the matter to rest. “But what about now? Is she—”

“She’s fine, Garret. I had supper sent up for her, and she wants to talk to you before you leave for the night. I assured her you would be along a little later. But don’t be too anxious. I think she’s needing some time to sort everything through. A great deal has changed in her life very quickly, and you need to be patient.”

“Of course,” he said. “What would I ever do without you? Either of you?”

“Well, without me,” Ritcherd said, “you would have married Kyrah and you never would have met Genny and—”

“For that and many other reasons, I’m glad to have you around,” Garret said and Ritcherd laughed.
