CHAPTER SIX

SCOTT’S hooded eyes and the sensual curve of his lips made Hannah’s blood speed through her veins. A blur of shapes and colors whirled around them. Scott was the only person who remained in focus.

Her gaze locked with his blue one. The air snapped round them. He leaned toward her. Her lips parted.

A man moving between the tables jostled Scott’s chair. Pulling back, Scott sat straighter. The moment evaporated. He’d been thinking about kissing her again. She would’ve let him.

“I think, no, I know, kissing you could get out of hand and I promised no pressure.”

As far as Hannah was concerned, he could forget that pledge. She wanted him and she wanted to feel wanted. Even if it was just for a little while.

“There’s a silent auction going on. I read a trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon was being offered. I’d like to bid on it. After we check that out, maybe we could dance, if you’d like,” he said, standing.

Scott sounded a little formal all of a sudden. The abrupt shift in his attitude made her feel a little lost. He’d been so warm minutes before. Had that kiss affected him as much as it had her?

Lifting a finger, Hannah touched her bottom lip. She should be grateful for the interruption. It gave her time to get her emotions corralled.

As they strolled side by side toward the auction area, she noticed the number of admiring looks that came Scott’s way from other women. Hannah glowed with feminine one-upmanship, knowing he was with her.

The area where the auction was set up was quieter. A few other couples strolled around the tables. Scott located the Canyon trip and wrote his bid on the sheet. Hannah coughed to cover her gasp of shock when she saw his bid amount.

He must’ve known what she thought because he said, “It’s for a good cause.”

“Yours or the hospital’s?” she asked with a grin.

“Both.”

Hannah realized he could afford it. A reminder of how different their worlds were.

They continued down the line of tables filled with auction items. An exquisite blue floral teaset caught Hannah’s eye. Picking up the cup, she checked the bottom to find it had been made by a quality British company. She ran the tip of her index finger along the scalloped rim of the fragile cup. Returning it to the matching saucer, she lifted the pair to admire what a beautiful pair they made.

“It’s beautiful.” She spoke more to herself than Scott. The magnificent set was one she’d enjoy owning and using.

“Would you like to bid on it?” Scott asked from behind her.

She’d been so engrossed in admiring the set she’d not seen Scott put down an autographed baseball and join her.

“No. No. I was just looking.” Even the starting bid was way beyond what she could afford.

“I’d be glad to bid for you.” Scott studied the auction sheet.
