Chapter Four – Aftermath

Adrienne marveled at how little she felt over Brent’s rejection. It was as if her heart had broken in half to the point that she could no longer feel. It was unlike when she had caught Thomas cheating on her, which had sent waves of pain through her, making her feel sick.

This was just nothing. It was as if everything had been drained out of her. That night she stared at the ceiling of her bedroom after she had put Joanna to bed. She felt as if she was going over everything with a fine tooth comb, wondering where mistakes had been made and where she should have put a stop to her heart before now.

Adrienne wanted the Brent with the melted ocean eyes. She wanted the Brent that confided in her and was embarrassed to tell her that he played computer games. She didn’t want the man terrified of his own father and haunted by the ghosts of his brother and mother. She didn’t want a man who couldn’t settle down because he didn’t want to open his heart or disobey his dad.

Adrienne rolled over, looking at her closed window. Now she had another thing to debate – should she stay? It seemed stupid to stay. Maybe he could transfer her to another floor. That way she could keep the excellent pay but never have to see him. It is the least that he could do for her, after what he had put her heart through. Adrienne decided she would ask. She couldn’t bear to interact with him every day.

When she went into work the next day, a tall black woman with her hair pulled up in a ponytail and in a tennis outfit was waiting. She smiled at Adrienne brightly.

“Just waiting for Brent.” She said and showed her the racket she was carrying.

“Tennis lesson?” Adrienne asked, feeling on auto-pilot.

“Of sorts.” The girl said with a wink.

Adrienne walked through the door to her office as Brent was coming out in his own tennis outfit. He stopped short at the sight of her but she forced a smile on her face.

“Have a nice lesson, sir.” She said as she sat down at her desk.

He hesitated for just a second but Adrienne noticed. She didn’t say anything and watched him go. Before he got in the elevator, he glanced back at her, as if waiting for her to say something.

But she didn’t. Adrienne still felt empty from the news he had delivered to her about going their separate ways. If she wasn’t with him, then why should he care who he saw? She closed her eyes for a couple of minutes and exhaled slowly. Then she went back to typing at her computer.

When Brent came back from his tennis lesson, Adrienne had filled out the proper forms for a change of department request and had them ready to give to him. She waited until he had settled in and then walked into his office, placing the papers on his desk.
