Chapter 6

Hassan walked up the front steps to the house and opened the massive doors safeguarding the home within. Grabbing Rayne by the arm, Hassan escorted him into the entry hall of the great keep.

He tried to imagine what Rayne saw when he looked around the entry hall with vivid curiosity. Would he see the cobwebs in the corners or fading colors in the tapestries that hung on the walls? Or would he see that the house was well lived-in and loved by all of them, even if they didn’t have time to keep it in perfect shape?

“This is the great room,” Hassan said as he led Rayne to the room straight in front of them. The room had a lot of potential, but the furniture needed a lot of help. It was old and raggedy looking. At one time it had been beautiful, but it had all seen a lot of wear and tear.

Hassan took Rayne’s hand and led him across the great hall to a short hallway on the east side and the closed doors at the end of the hallway. “This is the war room. You are never to go in here unless told to by me. Do you understand?”

Rayne frowned but nodded his head. Hassan reached for his hand again and pulled him back into the great room. “Come on, I’ll show you the rest of the house later. Right now you need to meet my family.”

Hassan led Rayne through the hallway and down the stairs to the kitchen. Hassan saw the questionable look on Rayne’s face and looked around, seeing the kitchen through his eyes. “I know it’s not much to look at, but someone did clean it up. I’m sure you can do something with it.”

Rayne looked around the room, his gaze coming to rest on Hassan’s uncomfortable face. Reaching up to lightly stroke his face he said, “It looks very clean. Someone did a real good job. I am sure that I can fix it up real nice.”

“I’m sure you can,” Hassan drawled with distinct mockery. He turned and walked back up the stairs, not waiting to see if Rayne followed him. Turning around at the top of the stairs, Hassan stopped to stand between the entrance to the fourth floor and Rayne.

Rayne looked up into Hassan’s face when he bumped into him. “What?”

Hassan gazed into Rayne’s eyes for several moments before shaking his head. “It’s nothing. Never mind.” Hassan started to turn around when Rayne’s hand on his arm stopped him.

“Hassan? What is it? What’s wrong?”

Hassan turned back to Rayne, seeing the concerned look on his face. He grabbed Rayne by the arms and kissed him, his lips taking Rayne’s with a savage intensity. Finally, several moments later, Hassan raised his head from Rayne’s and stared deeply into his eyes, his mind clouded with uneasiness.

There were so many things he wanted to say to Rayne. He just couldn’t seem to make them pass his lips. Maybe it didn’t matter. Rayne was a brüter.
