A REVELATION AT THE FEAST OF LA MADONNA DEI POVERI: THE BLACK MADONNA IS ALIVE!

On August 14, 2016, I had an amazing revelation at the Feast of Our Lady of the Poor, where I led my third pilgrimage of the Black Madonna with a wonderful group from America, travelers mainly from New York and California.

I have been blessed to be able to lead this pilgrimage to the sacred sites of the Black Madonna in Southern Italy and felt from the beginning that I was guided by Her, in dreams and in my daily reality, to create this pilgrimage and make Her known to the world, to bring her to people who normally would have never known Her the way I do.

On the last day of the tour, I chose the Madonna dei Poveri from Seminara Calabria to close the pilgrimage in a powerful way. After coming here for so many years I had a shocking revelation. When I arrived with the group, the feast had begun with the procession of the giant puppets and the drummers playing the fast 6/8 rhythm of the tarantella on snare drums, bass drums, and cymbals. I felt the usual energy and adrenaline running fast inside me and ran toward the drummers to be part once more of this astonishing drumming and dance ritual in honor of the Black Madonna.

As I got closer I was excited to see again the capo banda, the lead drummer I had known since 1987. He was still of small stature but super strong. He kept an incredibly fast rhythm on the snare drums with many variations of accents and great mastery and pride. In 2016, he was very proud to tell me that he had won the golden drum award in Palmi, Calabria. I stayed with him and his group and watched with great admiration the beautiful dance of the giant puppets.

After the wild drumming and dance celebration I felt la Madonna dei Poveri call me to go inside the church and pay homage to Her, as I have done for so many years. The church was crowded with all the devotees from the town getting in line to be close to Her, to touch Her with a white handkerchief, which is the traditional way to receive Her blessings and healing. It was emotional for me, as it had been many times before, to stand there looking at Her, as She stared back at me, following me in my movements.

I know that she could see me and everyone. Yes, this Madonna to me is one of the most mystical and mysterious with Her beautiful dark-brown face. There are no eyes painted on Her face, but at the same time, She has a clear gaze and stares at you from the depth of Her dark face.

I have always felt that She is alive, and when I followed Her in procession, I would just stare at Her, feeling an overwhelming energy of empowerment and a lot of compassion coming from Her, since She is the patron of the poor and the outcast.
