CHAPTER

EIGHT

Sunday was long and slow. I spent the morning at Hannah’s, listening to her talk about her date with Jeremy. He had taken her to a fancy restaurant, and then out dancing at a club. She had to be at work at one, so I went home.

Mom was happy to see me home early. She had been worried about Sunny Saturday night, but by Sunday afternoon, he was feeling better. She took us back to the mall and we saw Somebody Save Scamp!

At home, Mom grilled both Sunny and me on our classes and what we were doing at school. She asked Sunny about his swimming lessons, and, happily for me he didn’t slip. He just told her how much fun he was having. I studied for a couple of hours, and then quizzed Sunny while Mom was out grocery shopping.

That evening, I jumped each time the phone rang. Once it was an old school friend of my mother’s. She talked to him for a long time. The other time it was some telemarketer. Mike never called.

I resolved to ignore him at school. It turned out to be easier than I thought it would be, because he wasn’t there on Monday.

I flirted shamelessly with Steve.

During American Lit, Jenny told me all about the romantic dinner Jon had made for her on Saturday night.

“At his house?” I asked.

“Uh-huh,” she said.

“And his parents were gone?”

“Uh-huh,” she said again.

“And all you did was eat dinner?”

“Uh-huh.” She was blushing.

“Are you sure?”

She laughed. “Well, maybe that’s not all we did. But we didn’t do anything we haven’t done before. I told him I was still mad about what happened at the mall.”

“What did he say?”

“He said that in the future he would be sure to ask me what I wanted to do, instead of trying to tell me what to do.”

“Did he tell you what he and Mike did when they left?”

Jenny shook her head.

“Did he tell you what Mike said?”

Jenny gave an exasperated sigh. “I was talking to Jon about us, Skye. I didn’t ask about you and Mike, because I thought that was over.”

I decided to screen calls again Monday night so I wouldn’t have to talk to Mike. It was easy. Nobody called.

I was miserable when I woke up Tuesday morning. Jenny was right, I realized. My brief relationship with Mike was over. I wasn’t going to have the chance to dump him—apparently he had already dumped me.

I tried to tell myself that he wasn’t worth it, but I kept thinking about the way I felt when I was alone with him. He made me feel attractive and desirable, and I had to admit it was a good feeling. I didn’t want to give him up. Then I remembered his angry insistence on getting his way, and I got mad all over again. If he doesn’t want me anymore because I won’t sleep with him, I thought, then fine, he can just go find someone else.

I was also upset that I wouldn’t have a chance to qualify for state today because Coach had decided to put everyone in off events.
