‘DI Kimberly Hart.’ The answer to the phone was abrupt, as if the answerer had already been talking to someone else. It was projected into the interior of the car on the hands-free. Harry and Maddie both sat still. Harry had the car ticking over for the heater.

‘Good morning. This is DI Harry Blaker from Lennockshire Police. I’m here with DS Maddie Ives . . .’ He paused, waiting for an acknowledgement.

‘Lennockshire?’ She sounded hassled.

‘That’s right. Down on the coast. I’m sorry to call you out of the blue, I was hoping you might have a few minutes to talk about a case you’re working?’

‘Sure. I tell you what, could you give me a second? Or maybe I could call you back? I’m just getting to a scene — you know how it is.’

Harry made eye contact again. Maddie certainly knew how it is with senior officers arriving at a scene for the first time. They would have a million questions, both fired out and received in. There was no way she would be getting back to them any time soon. Harry must have had the exact same idea.

‘Actually, this is important. Maybe for both of us. It shouldn’t take a minute.’ Harry stopped. He had been effective at putting her on the spot. There was only one answer.

‘Okay, what have you got?’

‘I’ve been made aware of a brief summary of a murder scene you attended and subsequently became the SIO for. Janet Foreland. A white female, forty-five years old, found with a wire ligature round her neck and stabbed in the neck in an apartment overlooking Bristol canal.’

‘Janet . . . Yeah, okay. A couple of months back.’

‘So I see.’

‘Did you have some information for me?’ The woman’s voice was more levelled now, as if they had a little more of her attention.

‘We might have. We have two sus deaths in a couple of days. Both victims were found by their partners with frenzied stab wounds in their torsos. They were trussed up by the neck by a wire over a loop and lifted up onto their tiptoes.’

‘Okay. And you think that’s relevant to my job? Janet received a clinical cut to her neck She was also seated on the floor when we found her. Probably moved after she died and positioned against the wall.’

‘Positioned?’ Maddie cut in.

The DI took a moment to react to the new voice. ‘That’s what I said. What makes you think it has anything to do with your job? I mean Lennockshire, that’s three hours from here — four, maybe.’

‘How was she positioned?’ Maddie persisted.

‘Sitting. One leg pulled up. Her head was held by a wire that was tied off on the ceiling. She was against a wall but the offender used her blood to . . . well . . . to make a statement, for want of a better word.’

‘A statement?’

‘It was a white wall. But there wasn’t much white left. It was covered in her blood. A random pattern, to me, at least — swirls.
