I dress myself slowly and leave him

in the watercolor hues of morning,

his eyes still closed as I creep away,

let myself out the front door, ducking

my head and rushing past neighbors

collecting their Sunday papers, cheeks

burning with the same pink that swirls

through the sky, the same pink he plunged

into in the emptiness of nighttime

when he found it in him to kiss my face,

still sticky with sweat and tears, swollen

and bloated like a corpse washed

up on the shoreline. He found

it in him to weave his fingers

into my hair, grab me and throw me

around until we were both screaming.
