“You wish for me to leave the condo? Has this anything to do

with Elden?”

“Everything.”

It was as Triste expected. It would at least allow him a meeting

with his handler, but leaving Varun’s side was not something Triste

wanted to do. “I understand.”

“Make sure Amer is prepared to pick up Fremont and our guest at

Sweet Sally’s.”

“You mean Eric?”

“Of course.”

Triste nodded. “What do you hope to gain by bringing them

together?”

“A reaction.”

“Sir?”

Varun carefully placed his violin in its case. “Eric was brought

here in order to lure Elden. I want a name. I don’t believe the person

responsible has been mentioned by the parties involved yet.”

Triste understood. He was seeking the same information but for

Varun’s benefit. “What did Nia tell you?”

“Nothing,” Varun answered. “He expressed his anger about his

mate’s lover, believing I had known all along. He didn’t look well, but

I blame too much sweet wine and not anything resulting from an

attack.”

“It’s said that Elden hurt three individuals, but he doesn’t look

strong enough to do that.”

“Neither do you, but you could defeat twice as many.”

Triste smiled softly. “It’s merely power in numbers. Put me alone

against a devil and I’ll lose.”

“Not always,” Varun whispered. Triste looked away, believing

the words had double meaning. “Elden carried the element of surprise

on his side.” Varun picked up the topic again. “Strays don’t fight back.

No one expected him to lash out like that.”

“Will you tell me now when you’ll return him to Senac?”

“I refuse to place you in that sort of danger, Triste.”

Triste raised his jaw a fraction. “And if I request you burden me

with the situation?”
