[27] NECESSARY ALLIES

Rem Vlachko, still nauseated from lack of sleep after flying in from Berlin to meet with Ken Morotski, regarded the CIA man sitting across the table, who had also arrived in Paris this morning as part of the damage control team sent by Nathan Leyman.

Christoff Deppe was still angry and deeply concerned that the intruder, who turned out to be FBI Agent Karen Frost—based on the digital photos snapped by the security Orbs—may have recorded his conversation at the mansion and somehow had managed to escape. Deppe had dispatched Rem to Paris soon after Nathan Leyman had contacted Deppe with the news that the CIA attempt to find the elusive Troy Savage may have backfired. Leyman had devised a plan to capitalize on Tom Grant’s contempt for Savage after the Singapore incident by using the beautiful Rachel Muratani to convince Grant to do the honors. Now it seemed that pulling Grant out of his early retirement might have complicated matters.

“You bring us good news, friend?” asked Rem. “Have you found our missing officers?”

Morotski slowly shook his head. “They never showed up at the rendezvous point. Leyman convinced Director Bane to approve termination signals for their implants. We triggered them within an hour after they shut off communications.”

“Why terminate them?” Rem asked, confused. “I thought the plan was to use Grant to find Savage and his elusive network.”

“Yes, yes,” said Morotski, forearms on the table, fingers interlaced. “The problem is that the informant didn’t point Grant in Savage’s direction. That is why we tried to have him and Rachel Muratani killed. But the attempt failed.”

“In which direction did the informant point Grant and Muratani?”

Morotski made a face. “The former arms dealer pointed them to you, to CyberWerke. He even mentioned you by name, as well as Mr. Deppe.”

Rem Vlachko sat back and crossed his arms. The situation was indeed as critical as Leyman had suggested over the phone. It was bad enough they had the FBI probing into their affairs in California and Berlin, but now Leyman had made it worse by also adding CIA Officers Grant and Muratani to their worries.

“You disappoint us, friend,” said Rem as calmly as he could. “And we both work for a man who isn’t accustomed to being disappointed.”

The CIA man produced a handkerchief and wiped the sweat filming his brow. “Yes, I know. This is the reason Leyman sent me and a special team to Paris: to fix this problem once and for all.”

“What is our next step?”

“See,” Morotski said, producing a tape. “We recorded everything they said or heard—all the way up to the point where they disabled their implants.”

“And?”

“And we learned how they managed to get away. They received help from a most unexpected source.”

Rem leaned forward. “Savage?”

“Two of his operatives—who according to our official files were killed in Mexico two months ago—were present on Rue Cujas, creating enough of a diversion to keep my men busy while Grant and Muratani made their escape.”

“Are you sure they were Savage’s men?”

Morotski nodded.
