‘You have to tell me,’ Beth whined, crossing her legs underneath her as she sat on my mattress, popping a cherry drop into her mouth.

‘I don’t have to tell you anything,’ I said, laughing. ‘What do you even wanna know?’

‘You hab to tell me erything,’ she said, her words jumbled from the cherry drop she still had in her mouth. She swallowed and I moved to sit facing her on my bed as I waited for her to finish. When she was done, she repeated, ‘You have to tell me everything.’

‘Everything as in…’

‘You’re dating one of the hottest guys at school, right?’ she asked, and I nodded. Automatically. It was only after her sentence settled in the air that I realised what I’d just agreed to. Dean was quite popular, and he was the captain of the football team. ‘There has to be something you can tell me about him.’

‘I’ve told you most of it,’ I told her, grabbing a strawberry cable sweet from the stash in front of Beth. ‘Hopefully, you’ll get to meet him soon.’

‘Why couldn’t he join us today again?’

‘He has football practise on a Saturday morning. Plus, I wanted to talk to you about something without him being here.’

‘Okay,’ she said, her face settling into one of utter seriousness. Beth may be upbeat most of the time, and boy crazy all the time, but she also knew when I needed her to be real with me. To listen to me and help me with whatever silly notion was running through my mind. ‘Shoot.’

‘Okay, so…’ I started, then paused, not sure how to word it. I knew I could talk to Beth about everything, and I often did, but what I wanted to talk about was something she didn’t have much experience with either. ‘Things between Dean and me have been getting a little… heavy?’

‘Heavy? How?’

‘Okay, so at first it was just kissing and stuff, right? And I can handle that. Heck, I enjoy that. But then his hands start to wander or he’ll whisper something in my ear that tells me he wants to take our relationship to the next step and I don’t think I’m ready for that.’

‘Well, then tell him that,’ she said with a shrug as if it were the most simple answer. And I supposed that to Beth it was. She didn’t have the demons in her past like I did. Plus, she was always pretty vocal in life about what she was and wasn’t okay with. ‘From what you’ve told me about him, he’ll understand.’

‘I know.’ I toy with the sweet between my fingertips, too agitated to eat it. ‘But I worry he’ll ask me why.’

‘Okay…’ Beth looked at me closely. ‘And I’m guessing you don’t want to tell him?’

‘Not really.’ Even just the thought of telling him has my pulse quickening and my palms sweating. ‘What if he judges me for it?’

‘Layla,’ Beth said, her tone filled with sympathy and understanding. ‘Why would he judge you for something
