As soon as Aidan returned to the bedroom to get his laptop, he could see that Liam was upset. “What’s the matter?” he asked.

“Nothing.”

“Come on, Liam. I can read you like one of those books for little kids, the kind with no words, just pictures. And something’s bothering you.”

“You say the strangest things,” Liam said.

“Don’t dance around the point, cowboy. Are you still irritated that Yahya’s been keeping secrets?”

Liam turned to him. “Yahya?”

“Yes, Liam. Our client?”

“It’s not Yahya, though the situation here is certainly deteriorating. I made a bunch of calls, trying to get more information about my mother and my scumbag ex-brother-in-law, but all I got was voice mail and wrong numbers. It’s frustrating.”

“I know. But we’ll be there soon.”

“I have a couple more people to try,” Liam said as he sat on the side of the bed. “I’ll stay here.”

And brood, Aidan wanted to add, but he didn’t.

He carried his laptop to the dining room and sat at the table beside Havva. She searched for information on the man who had bought the scroll from Evadne and Jacobo. Aidan took a different tack, looking online for pictures that might match the one they had. Meryem and Ishak sat on the floor in the living room, continuing to look through the things Meryem had inherited from her family.

As an attorney, Havva had access to legal documents like property records. Most of the older documents had not been digitized, though, and because it was late, the records offices were already closed and would not reopen until Monday.

Aidan had more luck. “Look at this picture,” he said, turning his computer screen so Havva could see it. “Does that look like the same scroll?”

He had found the website for a Jerusalem museum, which had photographed many of the objects in its collection and posted them online. “It looks similar,” Havva said.

“And the details match,” Aidan said. “It’s in the Romaniote style, originally from Greece but purchased by a private buyer in Istanbul, then donated to the museum ten years ago as part of a bequest.”

“What is that word?” she asked.

“Bequest? A gift after death. So whoever owned it before the museum is dead now. And that makes it almost impossible to get the scroll back.”

They called Meryem and Ishak in to show them. Aidan noted that Ishak had replaced the simple white sling around his cast with a bright red scarf.

Meryem shook her head when she saw the image on the screen. “Ayol,” she said. “This is a bad thing.”

“Maybe you can convince Nissim that it’s good,” Aidan said. “Look at it this way. If Nissim cares about this scroll, and keeping it safe, he should be glad it’s in a museum.”

“But he wishes to take it to Greece with him.”

“I saw the way he and his son live,” Aidan said. “I don’t know how much it would cost for them both to move to Greece, but I can’t see that they have the money. Could you and Yahya pay them?
