Chapter 11
I did go back and forth about whether or not to call Mendoza.
I knew I should. Tara was a suspect in Haroldâs murder. Sheâd been nearby when the fatal shot had been fired. If she thought that Harold had killed her sister, or was otherwise responsible for her sisterâs death, she had motive. And as Mendoza had pointed out, the meansâa gunâwas easy to come by.
On the other hand, I wasnât feeling friendly toward Mendoza today. Not only had he not called me so far, and the day was almost over, but heâd done something last night that had put a very satisfied sort of look on Heidiâs face when she talked about it. And not only that, but heâd done the same thing, or something like it, to Jacquie the night David died.
And with me, meanwhile, he hadnât gotten past calling me by my last name.
To put off the decision, or at least the moment when Iâd have to do something about the decision, I called Zachary. âDo you have a date tonight?â
âNot so far,â Zachary said.
âWould you like to do something for me?â
âSure thing.â
I explained what was going on. âWhat I need you to do, is park nearby, but not so nearby that sheâll notice you. And when she leaves again, I need you to follow her. Carefully, so she doesnât notice you then either.â
âI can do that,â Zachary said. And added, âYouâre sure this is safe, right, Gina?â
âOf course itâs safe,â I said. âJust make sure she doesnât notice you.â
âI wasnât thinking about me. Iâll stay at a distance. But are you sure itâs safe for you?â
âOf course itâll be safe for me. Why wouldnât it be?â
âWell,â Zachary said, âif she shot Harold, and she knows you saw her there, she might want to get rid of you before you can tell anyone.â
âItâs too late for that. Iâve told you. And Mendoza.â And Heidi.
âDoes she know that?â
Well⦠no. âI figured it was better if I didnât mention it. Since I didnât want to give her a chance to change her mind about meeting me.â
âCall Mendoza,â Zachary said.
âI donât want to. He was at Heidiâs house at ten oâclock last night.â
âIâm sure he was just talking to her,â Zachary said loyally.
âNot from the look on her face.â Although that shouldnât matter. He was in charge of this homicide investigation. I had a tip. I needed to let him know.
âIâll let him know,â Zachary said. âAnd Iâll be there early, just in case sheâs early, too. Want me to keep you updated on the way?â
I thought about it, and shook my head. âNo. Stay as low-profile as you can. Donât use the phone. Just follow her home and let me know once sheâs inside. Make sure she doesnât see you.â
Zachary assured me he wouldnât be seen, and hung up.
