Chapter 5

“I’ll go out to my truck to get my first-aid kit,” Garret said. He ran out.

Sadie guided Blakely to sit down at the table.

“It all happened so fast,” Blakely repeated.

“I know,” Sadie said, gently peeling back the shreds of Blakely’s shirt. She reached for the pitcher of water on the table, poured some into a large dish, then found a clean cloth and dipped it in the water. “Let’s wash this off.”

Blakely nodded. “How does it look?” she said, deliberately looking away.

“Nothing very deep, but there are a lot of small scratches.” She gently ran the damp cloth over her arm and was relieved to see how superficial the cuts really were.”

“No need to go to the hospital?”

“I don’t think so.” Sadie worked her way up to Blakely’s shoulder and then the side of her face which had a nice cut. “It looks as if you were hit here then dragged across the floor. Do you remember what happened now?”

“It was dark in the shed. I know that I had left the door open in order to let the light in. I think I put a bucket of something or other in front of the door to hold it open. In fact, I’m sure that I put something to hold it open. Then I went inside, and I rummaged through the drawers and cabinets of the little work station in there and I heard a noise. I looked around, and when I didn’t see anything, I figured there was a mouse roaming around or something.”

“Then what?” Sadie said when Blakely fell silent.

Blakely looked at her, her eyes narrow and filled with tears. “There was a flash of bright sunlight and then suddenly, everything went dark. I mean, it was pitch black and I couldn’t see anything. I turned to the door to find that it was closed. I fumbled my way to where I thought the door would be, but I couldn’t find my way out. It seemed that everywhere I laid my hands, I got spiderwebs and gunk.” She stopped talking and her breathing became jagged and erratic.

“You’re okay now, Blakely,” Sadie said. “Nothing is going to happen to you now.”

Garret returned with a small box filled with bandages of various sizes. Sadie went through them and found what she wanted.

Most of the scratches needed no bandages at all, but she applied a small bandage to three of the deeper cuts around her shoulder and the larger gash at her forehead.

“Go on,” she then said, urging Blakely to continue with her story.

“I heard a voice,” Blakely said. “Not a clear voice. I couldn’t make out any of the words or anything. Just this strange whispering sound… crying whispers, angry whispers. Then the sound of something being dragged on the floor, like a sack of potatoes or something.”

She angrily swiped the tears away and looked at Sadie with determination. “Damn it, Sadie. You know me. I’m not a wuss. I don’t scare easily. I mean, I’ve lived in some tough neighborhoods.
