Twenty-One

As we went through the kitchen, Jackson rose from his bed and followed us.

“It’s like he knows what we’re about to do,” I said.

“Dogs pick up on more than we give them credit for,” Luca said, placing the towel-covered box onto the coffee table in my dad’s office. Luca started lighting a fire.

I sat at my dad’s desk. Luca hadn’t been lying. It was covered with random papers. I had no idea where to begin straightening it. I found the wooden cross that my mom had given my dad all those years ago. I placed it on top of a stack of papers. Then I started opening the drawers.

Luca said, “What are you doing?”

“Searching for his stash,” I said.

“Do you think he’d be stupid enough to hide stuff in here again? Besides, I thought we were going to read the notes.”

“He’s a creature of habit,” I said as I pulled out a bag of pills from the back of the bottom drawer. “And you are going to read the notes and I will listen.”

I stood and took the pills to the fire. I opened the bag and dumped the pills onto the flames. The flames changed to blue and green before going back to yellow.

“Why are you burning them?” Luca asked.

“Because I’m pretty sure this time he’d dig through the trash for them,” I said while hoping Luca was going to disagree with me.

He remained silent.

“Want me to help you look for more?” Luca asked.

“Nope,” I said. If the search was finished, I would have one less reason to avoid the notes.

Luca said, “You’re sort of taking the easy way out.”

“I’m searching my dad’s office for the drugs he’s doing. This is not the easy way,” I said, trying to make him feel bad.

“Yeah, okay,” he replied. He unwrapped the box.

I cringed at the sight of the rusty metal and started searching the bookcases.

“The first note says ‘Hello,’ ” Luca said, placing it on the table.

“That’s all?” I asked.

“Yep.”

“How did she even know who it was from?”

Luca asked, “Do you want to touch it and find out?”

“No, thank you,” I said, continuing to rummage behind the books.

“The next note says, ‘I hope your day was pleasant.’ ”

I mumbled, “Her day would’ve been more pleasant if she hadn’t gotten a note from a serial killer.”

He ignored my remark and picked up the next piece of paper. “The next is, ‘You made me smile today.’ ”

“He’s making me gag,” I said.

“I’m not sure your commentary is helping,” Luca said.

I found a bag of powder and took it to the fire.

“Careful not to touch it,” Luca said.

“Trust me, I don’t want to touch whatever this is,” I said. I carefully turned the bag in on itself and allowed the powder to fall into the fire. The flames momentarily turned blue.

Luca read the next note. “ ‘I’m glad you figured out I’m your admirer. Though there was some fun in keeping things mysterious. I hope you like the gift.’ ”

“Admirer, stalker. Tomatoes, tomahtoes,” I said, carefully sealing the bag and stuffing it into my pocket.
