Chapter 12
Carole was taking the last of the night cream off her face. This had been her second week back at the gym after taking a month off. The soreness was finally going away. But the evil looks she kept getting from Arlene were on her mind. She knew Arlene and Justin had been sleeping together. Even though Carole had more men than she could handle at the moment, Justin would be the cream of the crop. Carole knew that some men cherished their money and their immoral ways more than they did their women. Thatâs why she had no problem taking as much money from men as she could get. She got satisfaction out of bilking men for as much money as she could. None of them knew about the others and thatâs how she wanted to keep it. She surely didnât want to mess that up until she could put together a new group. Carole had found herself some easy, sad men who thought they had found love.
Carole thought back to her first day back at the gym. There had been a lot of women there, but none were her friends. She wasnât an approachable woman. She was too quietâa dangerous kind of quiet. Everyone did their best to stay out of her way. She didnât care if a woman liked her or not, and it showed. Men were her only concern. There was nothing a woman could do for her, not even be a friend. She felt that women stab your heart deeper than men do.
Carole wrapped her hair and secured it with a scarf. She wanted to forget all of the gym scenes sheâd had with Arlene. Her mind went back to Justin and how he had not budged at her recent attempts for sex. It made her wonder if Arlene had that area wrapped up or if he hadnât returned to his giving mood yet. She reached for her day planner that was on the foot of her bed. She flipped through it, checking her appointments, hoping she could get her mind off Justin. She thought back to when she had called him a couple of days last week and tried to invite herself over, but he had declined. She thought about calling him now, but heâd made excuses about being busy on her two previous attempts. She had visited him a couple of times since Blairâs death, but he was not good company. Justin couldnât even hold a coherent conversation. Anyway, conversation wasnât what Carole wanted. His body and money would do just fine. After their first sexual encounter, Carole made every effort to set up a weekly tryst, but Justin was too committed to Blair, so he said, to ever leave her, even though he cheated whenever he got the opportunity. Knowing that Justin would never leave Blair, Carole decided she had to do something to make Blair leave him. Carole never thought that leaving the earring in Justinâs laundry hamper in the bathroom would lead to Blairâs suicide.
