Chapter Ten

Anna slept in on Sunday, but still woke with a headache and barely enough energy to do more than get out of bed, shower, and go back to bed with her iPad. She watched episode after episode of a cooking show she didn’t care about, just to give her mind something to focus on besides Finn.

She’d told him she wanted to have sex with him. Just flat-out said it.

The memory of cornering him outside the restroom made her want to pull the covers up over her head and never come out. But that wouldn’t work because Eryn would find her pretty quickly.

Eryn.

She couldn’t juggle the Bayview Inn, her mother and Finn without Eryn catching on. Her assistant knew her too well. They shared a living space. They even shared a car. And in a town like Blackberry Bay, it was only natural she’d wonder where Anna was disappearing to. And Anna couldn’t come up with any answers that didn’t reveal things she’d rather keep to herself.

One thing she knew she didn’t want happening was Eryn joining the entire crew in wondering what was going on with Anna.

Turning off her iPad, she got out of bed before she could change her mind. She found Eryn sitting outside in a folding camp chair, reading a paperback thriller. “Hey, Eryn, you got a second?”

“Inside?”

As nice as the weather was outside, she wanted privacy. And the bright sunshine was also killing her head. “Please.”

Once Eryn was inside, Anna grabbed them each a water from the fridge and they sat opposite each other at the dinette. Eryn opened her notebook, which she always did when they were going to talk about something work-related, but she definitely wasn’t going to need it for this conversation.

“I have something I need to confess to you,” Anna said, “but you absolutely can’t tell anybody.”

“You’re banging Finn Weaver.”

Anna almost choked on her water. Part of Eryn’s job was summarizing information and boiling it down to the pertinent details for her boss, and clearly she deserved a raise. “No, that’s…okay, yes. Not yet. But I will be.”

There wasn’t much sense in denying that one.

“Honestly,” Eryn said, “when I saw him go down the hallway after you last night and you were gone so long, I wondered if you were actually having bar bathroom sex.”

Anna shuddered. “No. Although, to be totally honest, I would have. I might even have asked him to, but he said to ask him again when I’m sober. He wouldn’t even kiss me.”

“That man’s a keeper.”

The words—meant to be funny—struck something deep inside Anna. She knew Finn was a keeper. She wanted to keep him all to herself, but she was trying not to admit that to herself yet. “Anyway, what I need to tell you is not a sexy secret. It’s a big, possibly ugly one.”

To Eryn’s credit, she didn’t rush to assure Anna she could keep an ugly secret. She closed her notebook and set it down. “How big are the stakes?”

“My job.” She hesitated for a second.
